Job description

Domestic Violence Shelter Advocate

Part time - 4pm-12 am, Friday, Saturday, Sunday

Occasional fill in shifts may be available

Position summary:

The Shelter Advocate is responsible for direct services to residents in the shelter. The Shelter Advocate will be responsible for maintaining accurate records of services provided to the resident during their shift. The Shelter Advocate will support individuals and families that have experienced Domestic Violence by using tools such as, active listening, empathetic response, crisis management, creative problem solving and connecting clients with community referrals and resources to meet their needs.

Specific tasks/duties:
Client services:

  • Provide crisis line support and screens clients for admission to the shelter. Provide referrals as appropriate to crisis line callers.
  • Upon client entrance into the shelter, complete intake packet and assessments with new shelter residents and answer any questions they may have regarding the daily operation of the shelter and the program.
  • Explain shelter policies to new intakes.
  • Complete shift change reports and input client data into ClientTrack as needed.
  • Provide Domestic Violence and life skills education and supportive services to empower survivors to be self-sufficient and independent free from abuse.
  • Assist with safety planning, provide residents with resources and referrals for community partners, employment, transportation, housing, health/mental services.
  • As needed, advocate for client with other social services agencies, shelters, mental health facilities and schools.
  • Track outcomes and provide required documentation for services delivered in a timely manner.
  • Upon training, assist with preparation of No-contact orders on the INcite system

Shelter operations:

  • Ensure completion of assigned chores to residents to maintain cleanliness of shelter.
  • Ensures equipment and work areas are clean, safe, and orderly.

Outreach

  • Networks and collaborates with community partners.
  • If assigned, presents educational programs to community organizations.
  • If assigned, attends provider fairs and community events.

Other:

  • Ensures adherence to universal precautions, fire safety and hazardous materials precautions.
  • Maintains current knowledge of primary areas of responsibility through attendance of educational programs.
  • Demonstrate an attitude of teamwork and professionalism. Work collaboratively to meet departmental and facility goals and be willing to perform other responsibilities and duties as assigned.

Bachelor's degree in human services, psychology, social work or criminal justice preferred or 1+ years experience in these fields.

This position is grant funded, continuation of this position is dependent on continued grant funding. As a state funded grant position, the employee will be subject to fingerprinting and background checks.

  • Evening shift
  • Weekends only
