JOB SUMMARY:
Proper use of controlled substances is vital to maintaining patient safety. In a hospital environment where numerous individuals are involved in the controlled substance use process, it is important to have a role dedicated to monitoring and maintaining the integrity of this process. The Diversion Specialist will be responsible for maintaining a comprehensive surveillance, auditing, and review program to assist in the prevention and detection of controlled substance diversion. This includes but is not limited to reviewing patient charts, investigating outliers in the administration and dispensing process, conducting random and specific audits to address areas of high risk, and monitoring documentation for waste of controlled substances. The Diversion Specialist will work with internal leaders to promote awareness of findings, deficiencies, and areas of risk. This role requires a thorough knowledge of controlled substance law, and technical skills will be utilized to generate reports and perform audits. The Diversion Specialist must demonstrate initiative and be willing to work as a cohesive member of a team.


Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Optimize the use of reports and functionality of available technology (e.g. Pyxis system) to prevent and identify medication diversion.
2. Conduct regularly scheduled audits to identify medication diversion in the various medication use processes.
3. Perform trend analysis and assessments of available information to identify medication diversion activities.
4. Work collaboratively with members of the Diversion Committee in determining next steps after a preliminary investigation and coordinating these activities.
5. Coordinate with the site manager and Human Resources staff if immediate action is required (e.g. impaired employee).
6. Identify opportunities for continued improvement in detecting and preventing medication diversion and discuss these with the operation manager.
7. Assist in the assessment, monitoring, development, implementation, and enforcement of internal policies and procedures related to controlled substance management.
8. Assist in training new personnel.
9. Maintain all records and documents in accordance with state and federal regulations.


Qualifications

Education:
● High school diploma or GED, Metropolitan Test or equivalent required.
● Graduate of ASHP accredited Pharmacy Technician Program, Associates Degree, or Equivalent Experience preferred.
● Biennial completion of 20 hours of ACPE-certified, Pharmacy Technician Specific Training (pharmacy interns exempt).
● Excellent knowledge of drug names desired with the expectation of continuing education on new drugs.
Experience:
● Pharmacy experience required. Hospital pharmacy experience preferred.
● Excellent verbal and written communication. Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and Rx Auditor preferred.
● Experience with Cerner and Epic health systems preferred. Pyxis experience preferred.

Licensure or Certification:
● AR Board of Pharmacy
● National Certification highly preferred

Skills:
● Shall possess the personal characteristics necessary for successfully fulfilling his/her responsibilities. These characteristics include good communication skills, initiative, and attention to detail, flexibility, and cooperation.
● Should demonstrate competency in all Pharmacy Technician I skills.
● Demonstrates proficiency and has responsibility for:
          o Knowledge and understanding of controlled substance law at the federal, state, and local level
          o Technical skills related to generating reports, conducting audits, and performing analyses

 

Must have training in: applicable EHR, pharmacy automation, and computer applications including Microsoft
Word.

 


Pay Range
$17.89 - $24.60 /hour
