SALARY: RANGE 44M $156,466.89 - $190,188.09

Under direction of the Superintendent or Superintendent's designee; provide security, law enforcement and protection to students, personnel and the public as well as the equipment and property of the District; supervise, counsel, train and evaluate assigned police, security and/or safety personnel; patrol District grounds, facilities, parking lots and specified off-site locations to enforce District rules and regulations, applicable laws and traffic regulations; provide assistance to District officials, staff; students, parents, citizens and public safety agencies as appropriate; investigate crimes and accidents, arrest and/or detain persons suspected of criminal behavior and perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications Required to Apply
The requirements listed below are representative of knowledge, skills and abilities required to satisfactorily perform the essential duties and responsibilities. The incumbent must meet minimum requirements set forth in Education Code section 38000, Government Code section 1031, and other applicable law.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
  1. Graduation from High School. College Degree preferred.

  1. Five (5) years of recent, full-time, paid law enforcement experience of acceptable level and quality at the rank of Sergeant or above Existing law requires United States citizenship.

Supplemental coursework typically be acquired through completion of applicable criminal justice courses in an accredited college, completion of a P.O.S.T. approved municipal law enforcement training academy required.
LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
  • A certificate stating freedom from Tuberculosis.
  • Possession of an active (California Penal Code section 832.32) Basic, Intermediate and Supervisorial P.O.S.T. Certificates required. Middle Management P.O.S.T. Certificate preferred.
  • Possession of current First Aid Certification.
  • Possession of current CPR Certification.
  • A valid California Driver's License and proof of insurability with the District.
  • Permit to Carry Concealed Weapon (CCW Permit) shall be obtained within 12 months of employment.
  • Prior to appointment as Chief of Police, all candidates must successfully pass a background investigation

Essential Duties
Incumbents in the classification may not perform all of these tasks or may perform similar related tasks not listed here.
  • Coordinate and assist in scheduling the operations and activities of a District-wide security program; train and provide the performance evaluation of District security personnel; develop and implement safety and security policies, schools, plans, procedures, rules and regulations and operations manuals necessary to implement the District security program. (E1)
  • Serve as liaison between the District, schools and local law enforcement agencies in police matters involving the campus community; confer with public safety officials and District administrators to coordinate activities, to resolve conflict, exchange information, and help insure safe and secure schools. (E1)
  • Respond to alarms at all sites after hours, conduct investigations as to the cause(s) and report findings to the Site Administrator; inform site and/or District administration of security and safety problems as they arise and propose solutions as required. (E1)
  • Train and monitor performance of all District security personnel; conduct classes to train District personnel in security procedures and policies; coordinate and assist in the scheduling and deployment of personnel as needed to assure adequate staffing of campus and District facilities including, parking and crowd control, social activities, meetings, registration, athletic and other events. (E2)
  • Prepare and maintain appropriate fiscal, operational and statistical records; inspect department vehicles, equipment and supplies to determine purchases, replacement and repair needs. (E2)
  • Operate and drive vehicles in support of essential duties; observe legal and defensive driving practices. (E3)
  • Perform inspection, maintenance and repair of weapons and armory equipment.
  • Develop and update training and policy guides, manuals and other materials for District security personnel. (E3)
  • Encourages the use of mental health services and restorative justice practices for students and employees, as appropriate.
  • Fosters an environment that embraces equity-minded practices, integrity, trust and respect; supports; increases cultural and ethnic diversity in department staffing, programs and services. Investigate and respond to accident, traffic, medical and other emergencies and serious crimes occurring on campus; notify and work in cooperation with city and outside law enforcement agencies as needed; identify, locate, detain, and restrain suspects as appropriate. (E3)
  • Interview victims, witnesses and persons reporting crimes; advise individuals regarding rights, prosecution, restitution, consequences and other options in the Criminal Justice System. (E3)
  • Develop and maintain a variety of investigative, criminal, safety, traffic, accident, statistical and other safety-related records and reports; assure the proper and timely filing of crime reports with town, city, county and State Department and agencies. (E4)
  • Supervise and participate in parking enforcement and traffic regulation activities on campuses and other District property; review reports and complaints from students and employees; answer questions and respond to requests for information from visitors and callers. (E4)
  • Maintain a safe work environment, enforcing safe work practices, reporting and investigating work related accidents, maintaining documentation and requiring employees to receive mandated training. (E4)
