Job Summary
To supervise and direct employees engaged in public safety dispatching and emergency call-taking operations on an assigned shift. Supervisors are responsible for the assignment of duties, scheduling, training and supervision of Dispatch Technicians based on the knowledge, guidelines, and regulations that apply to 911 Communication Centers.
Essential Duties
  1. Ensure that the assignments of persons under his/her supervision are properly and efficiently carried out.
  2. Initiate and maintain all records, reports and books relating to subordinate's work records and personal data information.
  3. Perform Employee Evaluations.
  4. Responsible for the appearance, equipment and conduct of those personnel under his/her supervision.
  5. Ensure that all the duties performed by Dispatch Technicians are in accordance with the Department's mission statement and values.
  6. Have knowledge of and obey all policies, procedures, rules, regulations, orders or directives pertaining specifically or generally to the Communications Supervisor.
  7. Enforce all policies, procedures, rules, regulations, orders or directives applying specifically or generally to employees under his/her supervision.
  8. Respond to and investigate complaints from staff and the public and deal with them appropriately, and when necessary, initiate discipline.
  9. Serve as the shift training coordinator in overseeing and administering new employee training, re-certification training for tenured employees, and administer the Communications Training Officer Program.
  10. Work a specific shift as determined by the needs of the Communications Unit while remaining available to work a flexible schedule to provide coverage as directed by the Director or Assistant Director.
  11. Check E-Mail, Voice Mail, and any assigned mailboxes at least once per workday.
  12. Represent the Communications Director in official functions and, as appropriate, in non-official settings.
  13. Respond to public record requests and, consistent with the guidance of the County Executive, to media requests for information.
  14. Prepare reports, memos, and correspondence as required.
  15. Perform other duties as required.

Supervision Exercised
Direct supervision of Dispatch Technicians on assigned shift.
Supervision Received
Receives supervision from the Communications Department Assistant Director.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Three (3) years responsible work experience in a public safety dispatch environment.
  • Prompt and regular attendance.
  • *Or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience, which provides the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities.

Knowledge Skills & Abilities
  • Management and/or supervisory experience in a public safety dispatch environment preferred.
  • Ability to Interact and communicate effectively with others.
  • Ability to plan, organize and direct the activities of a shift.
  • Ability to develop and effectively present ideas and concepts verbally and in writing.
  • A demonstrated capacity for originality and analytical thinking in a very complex, fast changing environment.

Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this position, the employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, climb, bend, twist, reach and feel. Employee is also required to push, lift or carry objects weighing ten (10) lbs. or less on an occasional basis. Employee is required to sit, talk, hear, handle and finger on a frequent basis.
Work Environment
While performing the duties of this position, the employee may work outside and may be exposed to noise. Travel on an occasional basis.
