POSITION DESCRIPTION
Summary:
The Disability Advocate position supports individuals with disabilities with their person-centered independent living goals. This is a 40-hour-per-week position with a pay rate of $18 per hour. This position requires a strong understanding of community resource navigation. This position assists individuals with disabilities with barriers they are facing regarding their independence. The Disability Advocate provides information and referral and assists in setting person-centered independent living goals to promote independence, empowerment, and self-advocacy.
Areas of Responsibility and Expected Job Duties:
Assist consumers in creating independent living plans based on their individual goals, as well as providing information and referral as needed. This may include phone, email, and face-to-face communications. Utilize person-centered planning techniques and promote independent living philosophy during all work with consumers, families, or community members.
Support consumers with individual advocacy needs regarding core services (transportation, housing, employment, education, recreation, accessibility, etc.) by assisting them with navigating systems and accessing resources. Support consumers in self-identifying their need for accommodations and assist them with barriers that are preventing them from reaching their independent living goals.
Qualifications and Important Requirements:
Education: Bachelor’s in a related field (i.e. human services, social work, etc.). Will consider equivalent work experience.
Experience: Two years working in a professional environment or non-profit is required.
Work Environment and Physical Abilities:
Standard office environment while performing duties; sitting at a desk, communicating, manipulating a computer keyboard, etc.
Must possess a valid driver’s license and have access to reliable transportation.
