About the role

This is a hybrid role based in Austin, TX

As Director, Software Engineering, you will lead multiple agile teams which deliver features and systems that power our next generation intelligent robotic coffee platform. In this role you will have the opportunity to lead development efforts for brand new services and applications, launch them, operate them, and continue to develop them. You are the leader of several engineering initiatives, driving success through your direct and indirect reports and business partners. You manage cross-functional teams of software engineers, test engineers, architects and product owners, and work closely with hardware development teams, offshore agile teams, and project leaders across Costa Coffee. You have a passion for coaching and mentoring to help individuals grow and you are obsessed with providing a great product experience, always looking for new opportunities to improve.

In this role, you will

  • Manage a team of talented technology professionals to motivate them, direct, and promote positive culture for the success of the organization

  • Lead the roadmap and release planning efforts

  • Own the end-to-end delivery and timeline of features, services and applications including design, development, testing and release

  • Ensure a high level of technical quality by driving technology and architectural decisions

  • Actively work alongside internal stakeholders to manage and prioritize engineering initiatives infrastructure changes, maintenance, and new feature requests

  • Track delivery and roll-up of project milestones and performance metrics for status reporting and continuous improvement

  • Ensure individual growth for all team members by ensuring they receive mentorship from you and key technical leaders inside the company

  • Promote best practices in software development, test, and deployment

  • Establish and refine effective agile practices that drive results and create an environment of empowerment and ownership

  • Identify and manage project issues and risks

  • Act as focal point for project problem resolution and escalation

  • Establish monitoring & operation of production services that promote quality and uptime

Required for this role

  • 3+ years of people leadership experience with Software Engineering teams

  • 3+ years of Agile experience, running medium/large complex projects with multiple dependencies through planning, implementation, release, and support

  • 3+ years of experience leading teams that build and maintain distributed/scalable web applications using technologies like Angular, TypeScript, JavaScript, C#, ASP.NET, HTML5 and CSS

  • 5+ years of hands-on software development

  • 3+ years of experience architecting and designing (architecture, design patterns, reliability and scaling) new and current systems

  • Substantial and proven object-oriented programming knowledge in Python, Java, C#, or C++ Proven track record of launching and scaling new cloud native and web applications

  • Experience in use of modern project management tools (Confluence, Jira, etc.)

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related degree, or equivalent work experience

  • Experience leading the interviewing and hiring of new full-time engineers

  • Strong interpersonal, analytical, problem solving, and organizational skills

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Ability to thrive in a dynamic team environment across multiple locations and time zones

  • Experience establishing effective agile practices from scratch

  • Experience developing and releasing native or hybrid mobile applications

  • Experience building and launching consumer facing software products or platforms
