Director, Platform Engineering

Responsible for leading architecture, engineering and operations teams for the Digital Innovation Platform. Hires and retains the best talent, manages technology vendor partners and owns the platform supporting all digital technology initiatives providing common platform components such as application and API frameworks, logging, observability, messaging, database, and pipeline automation. Responsible for ensuring the platform strategy supports the business plan and integrated technology plan. Evolves platform capabilities in service of the software development community while introducing standards that accelerate software development teams, reduce operational support complexity, and ensure reliability and availability service level targets.
KEY DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
Collaborates closely with technology and business leaders to align platform strategy with overall company goals.
Leads the platform strategy enabling digital, enterprise and restaurant technology initiatives. Develops strategies with technical subject matter experts to create and combine elements of a platform, and ensure delivery of identified platform enhancements
Manages multiple key vendor relationships, manages contracts and related performance, leads contract scoping and participates in negotiating contracts. Maintains strong stakeholder relationships.
Supports enterprise architects and technology project and product management stakeholders in developing and implementing technology roadmaps, including effectively evaluating buy/build/borrow decisions.
Communicates technical decisions to non-technical audiences and builds consensus around them.
Markets the value of the platform to technical teams and builds awareness through education and onboarding processes
Establishes and maintains a continuous improvement process incorporating internal software team satisfaction and technical performance measures.
Establishes, maintains and optimizes the investment plan to enhance and operate the platform, including working closely with cloud infrastructure teams and vendors on cost optimization.
Performs other related duties, tasks and responsibilities as required, assigned and directed.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education - Bachelors degree (B.S.) in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field required. Masters degree preferred. Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
Experience 6+ years experience as technology architect required. Experience within retail/hospitality industry preferred. Subject matter expertise in delivery infrastructure build out, modern security practices, modern API and application platform design and modern data architectures. Prior people management experience required.
Skills/Knowledge/Abilities
Strong interpersonal, collaboration and communication (written and oral) skills with ability to elicit cooperation from a wide variety of sources, including upper management, franchisees, and other departments.
Technical skills in cloud native architecture principles, containerization and PaaS approaches and tools (e.g. OpenShift, Kubernetes, etc.) and domain-driven factoring of service interfaces using domain modeling, event storming, and other techniques.
Leadership experience growing and managing a team.
Demonstrated integrity and ethical behavior.
Experience working both independently and in a team-oriented, collaborative environment. Time management skills to conform to shifting priorities, demands and timelines with analytical, problem-solving, detail-oriented capabilities.
Adept at conducting research into project-related issues and products.
Sound understanding of computer systems (hardware/software), networks etc. with ability to learn, understand, and apply new technologies.
Experience in controlling information technology budget.
Familiar with modern software development and standard project management techniques and principles.
Strong problem solving, leadership and team building skillset.
Physical Requirements - Ability to hear/speak clearly in person and on the telephone. Ability to operate a computer keyboard.

The range for this position is $180,000 - $280,000 and is based on an employee located at our corporate headquarters in San Diego. If the candidate is hired in a different city to work remote, we will apply a geographic pay differential based on the cost of labor in the market in which the employee resides.
