ROLE:Director of Youth Ministries

*
MINISTRY AREA:* Discipleship - ChristYouth

*
REPORTS TO:* Executive Director

*
LOCATION:* Christ United Methodist Church (CUMC), a Lighthouse Congregation in Greensboro, North Carolina

*
ROLE CLASSIFICATION & HOURS:*

  • Serve as a full-time, salaried church staff member
  • Work a weekly average of 40 hours, the timing of which will vary from week to week depending on the season and the needs of the church

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Embrace, teach and positively reinforce United Methodist theology
  • Lead, coordinate and grow CUMC’s Youth Ministries while serving as an effective faith leader and authentic role model
  • Collaborate with church staff, lay leaders and volunteers in team-first ways that maximize the gifts and talents of all
  • Build disciples by developing and implementing a comprehensive approach to CUMC’s ChristYouth ministries through sustainable group building, discipleship, worship, mission and outreach
  • Plan, develop, implement and oversee effective weekly, seasonal and annual ChristYouth activities - including but not limited to Sunday School groups, United Methodist Youth Fellowship (a.k.a. Sunday-evening youth group) and small groups dedicated to youth in grades 6-12 in collaboration with church staff, lay leaders and congregational volunteers
  • Serve as an advocate for youth and educate CUMC’s congregation about the hopes, concerns and needs of Youth at CUMC and in the Greensboro metro area
  • Guide and support the service of CUMC’s ChristYouth leadership team - which should be comprised of Youth-age leaders and adult volunteers alike - in evaluating the vision and goals of Youth Ministries. Facilitate regularly scheduled planning sessions accordingly.
  • Develop interactive and impactful ChristYouth programming, participating in continuing education events and training opportunities in support of that development
  • Manage CUMC’s ChristYouth budget in partnership with CUMC’s executive director and Director of discipleship
  • Keep records of ChristYouth engagement and participation
  • Ensure frequent and effective communication with church staff and leadership, parents and the congregation as a whole. Communicate in a timely manner using all available resources (phone, text, email, social media, website, newsletters, bulletin boards, etc.).
  • Mentor and support CUMC youth beyond ChristYouth activities (such as shared lunches at school, attendance at extracurricular activities, family visitation, times of crisis, etc.)
  • Develop ways for CUMC youth to recognize their gifts and avenues to grow as disciples of Jesus - and potentially Christian leaders - in and beyond the church
  • Ensure that CUMC’s Safe Sanctuaries policy is understood and observed in all ChristYouth settings
  • Recruit, train and sustain a volunteer team to work effectively with youth in all aspects of ChristYouth ministries, ensuring sufficient volunteer support and adult-to-youth ratios at all times
  • Regularly evaluate the needs of ChristYouth ministries, assessing when new adult volunteers are required and when current adult volunteers need to transition into new roles in or beyond ChristYouth ministries

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Demonstrated commitment to God and a heart-filled relationship with God as revealed through Jesus
  • Willingness to lead in the ways that Jesus would: with love, with grace, with compassion, and with high expectations of themselves and those around them
  • Passion for the nurturing of Youth and their spiritual development; able and willing to focus on effectively guiding youth toward and into authentic, lifelong faith
  • Youth ministry experience required; youth ministry experience in the United Methodist Church preferred
  • Innovative vision for effective Youth Ministries, powered by pied-piper persuasion to develop and sustain followership and ultimately discipleship
  • Evolving expertise in leadership of Youth and ministry with them
  • Evolving expertise in leadership and coordination of adult volunteers
  • Working knowledge with the spiritual, emotional, mental, physical and social elements of adolescent development
  • Recognition that every youth group and youth year are different
  • Unwillingness to settle or to coast with cookie cutters or the status quo
  • Growth mindset and commitment to continuously evaluate and improve, helping others go and do likewise
  • Demonstrated acumen for planning, developing, implementing and coordinating youth ministry concepts in collaboration with diverse individuals including but not limited to youth, parents, church colleagues, lay leaders and teams of adult volunteers
  • Bandwidth and sophistication to go well beyond the Sunday-evening youth group hours to encompass all that CUMC’s ChristYouth program should entail
  • Excellent communication and conflict management skills
  • Bachelor’s degree and/or professional certification in a related field preferred

COMPENSATION:

  • Based on relevant education, experience and expertise
  • Set by CUMC’s Staff-Parish Relations Committee in accordance with the Western North Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church
  • Benefits, based on role classification, are detailed in the CUMC Employee Handbook
