We are currently recruiting aDirector of Warehouse Operations for a well-known food distributor in the Capital District/Hudson, NY area. This is a direct hire opportunity.


The Director of Warehouse Operations is responsible for driving operational excellence by providing leadership and guidance to the company’s Day Warehouse, Night Warehouse, Logistics and Maintenance teams. The Director of Warehouse Operations is also responsible for team member engagement, and for promoting the safe, efficient, and profitable operation of assigned areas. Additionally, as the company’s HACCP Coordinator, the Director of Warehouse Operations is responsible for the direct oversight of the company’s Food Safety / HACCP plans and Food Safety Team.


Responsibilities will include:


  • Responsible for providing direct leadership of all activities pertaining to the company’s Day Warehouse, Night Warehouse, Logistics and Maintenance departments; including that of department Managers, Supervisors, Team Leaders, Trainers, Drivers, Associates and all other support staff.
  • Provides mentoring and leadership guidance and support to subordinates and other employees.
  • Responsible for overseeing the coaching, development, evaluation, and disciplinary action of all members within their purview in partnership with Human Resources.
  • Oversees the planning, implementation, and evaluation of the hiring and retention initiatives related to the assigned teams.
  • As the HACCP Coordinator, responsible for the direct oversight and maintenance of the Food Safety and HACCP plans.
  • Direct responsibility for engaging Company leadership and employees in delivering exceptional Food Safety and Food Security through continuous positive culture changes, monitoring and enforcement.
  • Active member of the Emergency Action Plan Key Responders Team and responsible for assisting in maintaining the Emergency Action Plan.
  • Develops and manages systems, policies, and procedures to standardize and enhance operational efficiency throughout the assigned areas of responsibility.
  • Develops and implements goals, strategic initiatives, objectives, policies and priorities for assigned areas of responsibility.
  • Develops, manages and monitors department budgets including generating and following up on purchase orders.
  • Directs the implementation of processes and management methods to generate higher ROI and workflow optimization.
  • Analyzes operational KPI’s to ensure accuracy, efficiency, compliance, profitability, proper material handling, and minimal damage.
  • Executes the company’s safety program by creating a proactive, consistent culture and awareness of safety and corrects unsafe employee behaviors as necessary.
  • Optimizes backhaul opportunities through oversight of the logistics portion of the company.
  • Manages building maintenance operations, preventative maintenance and repair needs and to ensure maximum operational efficiency of equipment.


Additional Responsibilities:


  • Flexibility with scheduling to meet business demands.
  • Participates in leadership and management training as required.
  • Ensures a consistently audit ready facility every day.
  • Performs various Vice President of Operations functions in the absence of the Vice President of Operations.
  • Coordinates the appropriate maintenance needs of the facility and equipment.
  • Ensures the appropriate review and audit of vendor invoices.
  • Completes or oversees the completion of all administrative documentation.
  • Works with the Human Resources team to plan, develop, deliver, and evaluate training programs. Follows direction set by the Vice President of Operations and performs other duties as required or directed.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to effectively lead and evaluate a large operational team in an ever-changing environment, including development, coaching, counseling, mentoring and training.
  • Ability to engage, motivate, organize and encourage teamwork through positive communication to ensure strong team retention and to obtain productivity goals.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills, adaptable for various levels within the organization and across cross-functional teams.
  • Ability to develop strategic business plans, contingency plans and realign priorities quickly when dealing with unanticipated events.
  • Collaboration skills to engage the various departments involved in meeting customers’ expectations.
  • Subject matter expert of GMP, HACCP, USDA, FDA, DEC, Ag & Markets and OSHA regulations.
  • Knowledge and experience leading a facility maintenance team.
  • Ability to build strong relationships with vendors and contractors, negotiate contracts, and ensure the terms of agreements are being obtained consistently.
  • Must be knowledgeable of OSHA industrial safety and safety/accident prevention programs.
  • Strong problem identification (root cause analysis) and problem resolution skills, drawing on team members from all relevant departments for input and resolution.
  • Ability to think strategically and develop solutions to address complex problems for goal attainment.
  • Ability to independently determine needs and oversee performance of a wide range of administrative and technical assignments associated with the Warehouse.
  • Ability to prioritize workload and effectively delegate in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented environment.
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office products, including Excel, Word, Outlook, and in the use of Internet Explorer.
  • Ability to learn and effectively use company-specific computer systems (i.e. Retalix, Data Warehouse, Mangrove, etc.) required for maintaining company data integrity.
  • Ability to efficiently and accurately enter company data/information into various computer systems.
  • Strong English language aptitude, including the ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; including the use of texting and email.
  • Persuasive writing abilities.
  • Ability to work a flexible work schedule including days, nights and/or weekends based on business need.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective and courteous business relationships.
  • Ability to work in varying temperature environments; including subzero temperatures.
  • Strong initiative and sense of urgency.


Education/Experience (Preferred Minimum Qualifications):


  • Possession of a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Business Administration, Management, Logistics or related field AND five (5) years of progressive leadership experience in Warehouse Operations, at least two (2) years of which must have been in a warehouse manager capacity.
  • Food safety experience preferred.


Licenses/Certifications/Special Requirements:


• Must take and pass a pre-employment drug test.

• Subject to random and reasonable suspicion drug testing.

• Fluency in the Spanish language preferred, but not required.

• Must wear approved steel/composite-toe, slip resistant, work boots when necessary.

• Willing to work additional hours as required or requested.

• Available for questions and problem resolution outside of standard business hours.

• A valid driver license must be maintained at all times while in this position.

• Moderate travel may be required to visit vendors and attend meetings/seminars.

• Possession of or ability to obtain OSHA forklift certification.

• Possession of HACCP Manager Certification or ability to obtain certification.
