Job Description:
The Director of Veterinary Nursing (DVN) is responsible for the management of Veterinary technical staff and assistants within the Louisiana State University Veterinary Teaching Hospital (LSU VTH). This includes recruitment and hiring of new personnel, supervision, assessment and discipline of Veterinary technical staff, scheduling of technical coverage, assessment of the quality of teaching, patient care and medical treatment provided by the technical staff in the veterinary clinic and supervision of all veterinary clinical technician supervisors.
40% Supervision of all veterinary technician supervisors in the VTH; schedule and coordinate technician coverage for holidays, general veterinary technical and assistant scheduling and management (when needed); emergency preparedness and absences coverage; approve compensation sheets; create and maintain a system for recognition of positive performance of Veterinary technical staff; conduct annual and periodic evaluations of probationary and established veterinary technical staff; monitor the quality of teaching, patient care and medical treatment provided by technical staff in the VTH; hold monthly meetings with all staff supervisors.
35% Administration: Assist and advise senior management in the development of business strategies and goals to promote growth and stability of LSU VTH; assist in development and implementation of hospital protocols and procedures; coordinate the recruitment, interviewing, hiring and evaluation of Veterinary technicians; oversee and advise on compensation planning, promotion and salary increases based on skills, knowledge base, performance and individual preference; ensure proper technical assistance for optimal patient care, treatments and diagnostics; advise senior management on clinical management issues.
15% Clinical / instructional: Assist (in conjunction with faculty) in the development and instruction of Veterinary students in clinical skills laboratories; coordinate and assist in the instruction of clinical skills to veterinary students in their clinical phase; provide technical assistance to clinical services when necessary; attend and participate in national and international continuing education programs; monitor and advise senior administration of equipment needs of the technical staff and hospital; represent LSU by participating in local, state and national veterinary technician organizations.
10% Communicate with and advise faculty and senior administration regarding policies, procedures, fees, patient care and personnel in the hospital; serve on various VTH committees and teams, provide support in revising and developing job descriptions for veterinary technical staff, assist the hospital director with VTH initiatives; other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree and seven (7) years of related experience.

Preferred Qualifications:
Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree with more than seven (7) years of experience.
Specific experience: three (3) years of supervisory experience; three (3) years in an academic setting.
Preferred Certifications/ Licenses:
Certification as a Veterinary technician specialist or a veterinary nurse specialist.
Special or Physical Qualifications:
Able to answer phone calls after hours from house officers, students, nurses for questions regarding patient care and other needs. May be required to work a variety of shifts including nights, weekends, and holidays.
Essential Personnel - This position may be required to report to campus in times of emergency and/or closure per PS-18.

This includes positions requiring firearms, access to controlled substances, handling hazardous material, operating heavy equipment or machinery, etc. These positions are subject to drug screens per PS-67/FASOP HR-04.
Required to be capable of lifting more than 50 pounds, standing or walking for prolonged periods, able to reach above and below the shoulder, vision (near sight), vision (far sight), kneel or sit on the floor, push/pulling, grasping, sitting, bending, squatting, and/or twisting.
