POSITION VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT
Director, Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory
The College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign is searching for an outstanding individual to serve as Director of the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (VDL). The American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians (AAVLD) accredited laboratory, which includes a zoological pathology service and satellite laboratory in Chicago, provides full-service, all-species diagnostic assistance to practicing veterinarians. The VDL also trains veterinary students and graduate students in diagnostic methods and supports the research community of the college and university with its laboratory services. The main responsibility of this faculty position is to provide organizational and administrative leadership to fulfill the teaching, service and research missions of the VDL. The CVM was founded in 1944 as the nation's 11th veterinary college and admitted its first class of 24 students in 1948. However, the history of Veterinary education, research, and service on the Urbana campus began decades earlier with the appointment of Dr. H. J. Detmers as Professor of Veterinary Science in 1870, shortly after the University was founded as a land-grant institution in 1867. From these beginnings, the college has grown to be ranked 16th in the U.S. and 41st in the world in the 2023 QS World University Rankings of Veterinary science programs.
Required qualifications: Candidates must possess a DVM or equivalent degree, advanced training (graduate degree or board certification in a relevant discipline), and experience in diagnostic Veterinary Medicine. At least 5 years experience in a Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory or relevant work experience preferred. Experience could include practice management, regulatory/policy, finance or quality management. Essential attributes include a record of fiscal responsibility and personnel management and a background indicative of initiative and leadership in the practice of laboratory diagnostic medicine with a commitment to service, teaching, and research. Candidates should have a visionary approach to Diagnostic Laboratory management and development and implementation of state-of-the-art programs. Outstanding communication skills are required in order to maintain liaison and foster working relationships with federal and state regulatory agencies, other state diagnostic laboratories, practicing veterinarians, livestock producers, animal owners and their constituent organizations, and various campus officials.
Salary: Salary, as well as faculty rank and title, will be commensurate with academic qualifications and experience. The academic appointment will be as a Professor or Associate Professor (Tenured, Tenure-track, or Clinical-track) as appropriate. The University of Illinois offers a competitive benefits package.
