Growing and nationally recognized manufacturer with substantial manufacturing operations in the Midwest, Canada, and Mexico, is seeking an experienced Transportation Director for their growing operations.
Reporting to Executive Vice President, this role develops and executes a robust, transparent, cost-effective logistics program that will serve all customers and other manufacturing locations.

This role manages all modes of Transportation to include domestic (FTL, LTL, IMDL, Parcel, 3PL) and then other North American locations (FCL, LCL, Air, Trans-Loading), import and export compliance.

Director of Transportation Responsibilities: 

  • Be present and hands-on!  Need a leader that can shift between being strategic and tactical and help the team problem solve.
  • Implement and drive all freight and transportation planning.  Develop relationships with company drivers and work to improve driver retention.
  • Utilize experience in daily outbound shipment to customer across North America.  Be a subject matter expert in DOT compliance and ‘Customs’ clearance and intermodal imports.
  • Provide real-time transparent shipment tracking for all modes of Transportation domestic and international. Must be able to work quickly to proactively resolve issues to prevent delay.
  • Develop KPI’s in order to measure, analyze, and continuously improve upon the logistics program, focusing on operations, purchasing, freight providers and 3PLs. 
  • Develop solid relationships with Customs Broker to ensure timely and correct flow of information.  Be able to conduct annual import/export compliance audit.
  • Manage outsourced logistics providers for all modes of Transportation, warehousing, claim processing and customs clearance. Ensure costs are competitive, customer service levels are meet and projects are delivered on time and on budget.
  • Capital appropriation request from RFQ through deployment.
  • Manage any equipment lease relationships.
  • Evaluate/audit third party carriers and develop a mixed strategy for our drivers to provide flexibility during business growth periods.
    Evaluate and optimize traffic from our Mexico facility across the border.
    Assume lead recruiting role in hiring and retention of drivers.
    Implement use of routing software systems daily and assess tools for continual optimization.
    Create transportation capacity strategies and develop contingency plans to cost-effectively support varying levels of the company sales and changes to supply/demand patterns.
    Work with divisions to monitor and adjust capacity as needed.
    Standardize logistics processes, ensuring implementation of best practices across the department.
    Forecast annual container load routes.
    Assist Purchasing on imports, including customs clearance and intermodal routes.

Director of Transportation Requirements: 

  • Bachelor’s degree with 10 years' experience in business, transportation, logistics, supply chain management or related field.
  • 5 years in a leadership role in the transportation and logistics industry with emphasis on trucking and fleet operations.  
  • Demonstrated in-depth knowledge in financial management – P&L, balance sheet, forecasting,
  • Experience in MRP, JIT Inventory Planning.
  • Domestic and international transportation management, import/export compliance, cross-dock operations, and warehousing, receiving/shipping, and intermodal experience.
  • Successfully built, developed, and managed large logistics organizations and decentralized teams.
  • Travel is required up to 40% (estimated) both domestic and international.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment while balancing competing priorities, complex situations, and tight deadlines.
