Job description

Director of Transportation

The Director of Transportation is responsible for overseeing and managing all aspects of the Transportation function. This includes developing and implementing strategic plans to optimize transportation operations, ensuring compliance with regulations, and driving continuous improvement initiatives. This is a hands-on role that requires working across Operating Companies within the organization to ensure consistency and alignment and collaborate with cross-functional teams to align transportation strategies with overall business objectives.


Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement strategic plans: Create and execute strategic plans to optimize transportation operations, including route planning, carrier selection, and freight management. Identify opportunities for cost savings, efficiency improvements, and service enhancements.
  • Manage transportation operations: Oversee the day-to-day transportation operations, ensuring efficient and cost-effective transportation solutions. Monitor and analyze transportation performance metrics, identify areas for improvement, and implement corrective actions as needed.
  • Ensure compliance: Ensure compliance with transportation regulations, industry standards, and safety guidelines. Stay updated on changes in regulations and implement necessary changes to maintain compliance.
  • Lead and develop a high-performance team:Provide leadership, guidance, and support to the transportation team. Foster a culture of continuous improvement, professional development, and high performance. Coach and mentor team members to enhance their skills and capabilities.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams:Work closely with cross-functional teams, including warehouse, operations, sales, and customer service, to develop and execute transportation strategies that align with overall business objectives. Collaborate on projects, initiatives, and process improvements to enhance overall operational efficiency.
  • Vendor and carrier management: Develop and maintain strong relationships with carriers, suppliers, and other external stakeholders. Negotiate favorable contracts with carriers, monitor performance, and ensure reliable and efficient transportation services.
  • Stay updated on industry trends: Stay informed about industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices in transportation management. Evaluate and recommend the adoption of new technologies and practices to improve transportation efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Budgeting and financial management:Prepare and manage the transportation budget, ensuring effective allocation of resources. Monitor expenses, identify cost-saving opportunities, and implement measures to control costs while maintaining service levels.
  • Risk management: Identify and mitigate transportation-related risks, such as disruptions in service, capacity constraints, and regulatory changes. Develop contingency plans and implement risk mitigation strategies to ensure uninterrupted transportation operations.
  • Reporting and communication: Prepare and present reports, budgets, forecasts, and performance metrics related to transportation operations to senior management. Communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders, providing updates, addressing concerns, and ensuring alignment on transportation strategies and initiatives.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in logistics, supply chain management, business administration, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in Supply Chain management, with progressively responsible roles.
  • Strong knowledge of Transportation regulations, industry trends, and best practices.
  • Experience with refrigerated food shipping and delivery requirements is a plus.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills, with the ability to motivate and inspire a team.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities, with a data-driven approach to decision-making.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Proficiency in transportation management systems and other relevant software applications.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
  • Proven track record of driving operational excellence and achieving results.
  • Union experience a plus
