Job Description
The Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) invites applications and nominations for the position of Director of Student Affairs. This is a renewable, full-time, non-tenured, administrative position and reports to the Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic and Student Affairs. The position will be located in Reno, Nevada.
NSHE is comprised of eight institutions: two universities, a state university, four community colleges and a research institute. The public system of higher education in Nevada continues to experience growth with significant opportunities in serving over 105,000 students and 15,000 employees.
This is an existing position within the NSHE Department of Academic and Student Affairs.
The Director of Student Affairs manages statewide financial aid programs, including the Governor Guinn Millennium Scholarship (GGMS), Silver State Opportunity Grant (SSOG), and Nevada Promise Scholarship (NPS), with over $40 million in combined disbursements annually. Responsibilities include overseeing daily administration, reporting, technical updates, and procedural oversight of these programs.
In collaboration with system leadership, the Director of Student Affairs develops and analyzes system-wide policies and procedures related to financial aid and Student Affairs. The Director serves as the system office's subject matter expert in financial aid and student affair topics in support of policy development, system projects, reports, and presentations.
The Director represents Academic and Student Affairs in various contexts, including Board of Regents meetings, at the Nevada Legislature, and media interactions. The Director also leads quarterly meetings of NSHE Financial Aid Directors and represents the department on system-wide committees such as the Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Access (IDEA) Council and iNtegrate Shared Instance Alliance (iSIA).
SALARY GRADE: Grade D (starting salary range approximately $85,000 to $110,827; depending on experience). A benefits package that includes medical, dental, vision, life, and retirement.
APPROXIMATE STARTING DATE: July 15, 2024
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: A Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution with a minimum of five (5) years of related and progressively responsible experience directly applicable to the position (or) a Master's degree from a regionally accredited institution with three (3) years of related and progressive experience directly applicable to the position. Experience in administering financial aid programs in a higher education context is required
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Successful candidates must possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities. It is recommended that applicants for this position address each of the following items in the letter of application:
  • Federal and state financial aid policies and procedures;
  • Characteristics and attributes of financial aid data;
  • State and national trends, policies, and issues related to financial aid and other student services;
  • Public policy making, including knowledge of higher education and the Nevada Legislature; and
  • Nevada Revised Statutes, Board of Regents' Handbook, NSHE Procedures and Guidelines Manual.
  • Using computer applications and reporting tools (e.g. word processing, spreadsheets and presentation and report applications);
  • Setting priorities which accurately reflect the relative importance of job responsibilities;
  • Working independently and following through on assignments with minimal direction;
  • Analyzing information, problems, situations, practices or procedures to define a problem or objective, identify relevant concerns or factors, identify patterns, tendencies and relationships, formulate logical and objective conclusions, and recognize alternatives and their implications;
  • Organizing, summarizing, and reporting information in a meaningful fashion, including displaying information in tables or graphs.
  • Lead various statewide constituent groups, internal and external;
  • Work effectively and build consensus with diverse groups;
  • Read, interpret, and apply complex rules and regulations; read and interpret technical reports, governmental publications and federal directives;
  • Write comprehensive reports and recommendations. Produce clear, concise reports and other presentation materials;
  • Organize, summarize, and report information in a meaningful fashion, including the ability to concisely display information in tables or graphs;
  • Effectively time-manage projects and priorities to meet deadlines in an accurate and efficient manner;
  • Exercise judgment to solve administrative problems where the answer is not apparent;
  • Present information in a public setting to various constituencies, including the Board of Regents, legislative committees, local boards, etc.

RESPONSIBILITIES: The duties of this position will include, but not be limited to, the following areas of responsibility:
  • Perform day-to-day administration of statewide financial aid programs (i.e. GGMS, SSOG, NPS)
  • Serve as subject matter expert on financial aid and Student Affairs topics internally and externally - responding to inquiries from system administration leadership, NSHE institutions, media, students and families, Legislative Counsel Bureau, and state executive agencies
  • Prepare and present reports to the Board of Regents and Nevada Legislature, including data extraction and analysis (e.g. Financial Aid Report, Native American Fee Waiver Report, NPS Report, SSOG Biennial Report)
  • Represent the Department of Academic and Student Affairs on system-wide committees and task forces (e.g. NSHE Financial Aid Directors, IDEA Council, iSIA)
  • Collaborate on policy development related to Student Affairs
