The Director of Online Education drives strategic growth for online learning at William James College (WJC). This role creates structures and processes to encourage the College’s sustainable growth in Online Education. The director identifies external stakeholders and collaborates with internal stakeholders to develop accessible, in-demand online program offerings. The Director of Online Education works closely with various departments such as academic departments, Office of Educational Development and Innovation (OEDI), Education Technology Department, Information Technology (IT), Enrollment Management, Marketing, Admissions, Workforce Development, and Continuing Education to ensure consistency of Online offerings and an overall exceptional online experience for students and other program participants. This position ensures compliance of Online delivery with regulatory and accrediting bodies.
Essential duties
- Develops, deploys and evaluates the college’s strategy and processes for the launch of Online programs in conjunction with academic Department Chairs and other program directors.
- Works with academic Department Chairs and enrollment management to establish and achieve enrollment targets.
- Assesses the feasibility of new online offerings.
- Ensures that growth is supported by infrastructure (technology, administration, faculty, etc.) for effective delivery.
- Informs college policies to support a substantive online presence – including, but not limited to, human resources practices, faculty contracting, technology policies, and support services for students and program participants.
- Serves as primary liaison to assigned programs to promote awareness of and interest in these programs, with an emphasis on recruiting individuals and groups from underserved communities.
- Collaborates with the Office of Academic Affairs to create a culture of widely shared, technology-enhanced, effective teaching and learning practices, and ensures compliance with these practices.
- Determines the appropriate level of IT and administrative support needed to keep pace with growth of Online program offerings.
- Works with Ed Tech and IT to research and implement new technologies to enhance the online learning experience and uses a data-driven approach to refine which systems are ultimately employed.
- Establishes relationships with third parties, as needed, for course delivery and maintenance, including virtual test proctoring software and resource delivery.
- Ensures compliance with relevant regulations, accreditation standards, and accessibility guidelines for Online Education.
- Serves as the primary contact and compliance officer for the National Council for State Authorization Reciprocity Agreements (NC-SARA).
Skills & Qualifications
- A minimum of a master’s degree (doctoral degree preferred) in psychology, higher education or other relevant field with at least 5-7 years experience
- Experience with online program development and management
- Familiarity with licensing, accrediting bodies, and NC-SARA policies
- Ability to conduct market research and skill in budget preparation
- Strong communication skills (ability to anticipate, prevent, and resolve difficult and sensitive inquiries, conflicts, and complaints)
- Effective interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate well with others
- Ability to foster a cooperative work environment
- Strong computer skills
- Ability to work with a diverse team in a fast-paced environment
- Strong commitment to facilitating access to Online Education for individuals and groups from culturally diverse backgrounds
