DIRECTOR OF JUNIOR DEVELOPMENT

About New York Junior Tennis & Learning:

The New York Junior Tennis and Learning (NYJTL) is one of the largest after school tennis and education-themed community organization in the United States and offers comprehensive school and community-based programs throughout New York City’s five boroughs serving more than 100,000 youth from ages 5-18. The NYJTL afterschool program provides children with safe and nurturing environments in which they can learn and thrive academically, while receiving critical support to reach their potential, both on and off the tennis court. The NYJTL afterschool program operates in elementary, middle and high schools located in the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan and Queens. NYJTL is seeking bright, dedicated individuals who have a strong interest in working with after-school programs.

Position Summary:

The Director of Junior Development will manage and grow Junior Player Development programming, teach tennis skills, and provide on-court teaching programs, events, and camps for 25-28 hours per week. They will work with the Director of Tennis and Player Development to manage operations and must be able to work in other aspects of tennis as needed. The ideal candidate must have experience working with children, be passionate about teaching tennis, and adhere to a positive coaching philosophy. They will travel to offsite tournaments and handle administrative responsibilities as needed.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Provide an average of 25-28 hours/week on court teaching programs, special events and camps depending on seasonal demands or as needed.
  • Assist the Director of Tennis and Director of Player Development with lesson plans, court assignments, and general operations.
  • Manage and grow Junior Player Development programming.
  • Able to work in other aspects of tennis at CLC and NYJTL, including ACES, ITP, and CTP if needed.
  • Train and communicate with CLC staff as needed.
  • Significantly grow and develop junior programs at Cary Leeds, in terms of revenue, participants and quality, handling related administrative responsibilities as needed working with Department Directors.
  • Travel to offsite tournaments as needed with junior teams.
  • Teach tennis skills through effectively planned classes and practices at a level appropriate to age and ability.
  • Make sure instruction and games are safe, well organized and fun for children.
  • Must adhere to a positive coaching philosophy and motivate students through encouragement and praise.
  • Assist the Director of Tennis with the goal of providing the best possible instruction and teaching environment for Junior Player Development programming.
  • Provide proper warm-ups before activities and adequate conditioning for physical fitness.
  • Must be able to attend staff office meetings as needed.
  • Follow all CLC safety and health protocols both on and off the court.
  • Must attend all training sessions required by NYJTL and/or the USTA.
  • Must be able to perform other responsibilities as are assigned by NYJTL.

Qualities/Qualification Requirements:

  • Must be an accomplished tennis player, having played competitively either in college (D1-D3 level) or on tour professionally, and having managed comparable tennis programs at other clubs and/or schools.
  • At least two years’ experience working with elementary or middle school-aged children.
  • Exceptional group management, problem-solving and conflict resolution skills.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Genuine enthusiasm for developing professional skills through training opportunities and field practice.
  • Ability to communicate and work effectively and respectfully with a broad range of diverse constituents.

Job Type: Full-time

Salary: $65k+ individual private lesson compensation
