Job description

gRED Animal Resources supports Genentech's Research and Early Development (gRED) program by providing excellent animal care, veterinary services, and animal welfare and compliance oversight. gRED performs high quality research to develop drugs to treat unmet medical needs. gRED Animal Resources coordinates and oversees a high volume of studies in the fast-pace, highly competitive biotech and biomedical research industry.
We are currently seeking a highly experienced, hard-working, and enthusiastic Director to join our team in leading a successful IACUC Program and Administration. This position will directly report into the Executive Director and Attending Veterinarian and be responsible for leading the administrative and operational functions of all IACUC related activities.
In this position you will work both independently and as a positively contributing senior leadership team member to apply your expertise to employ strategies to ensure that the institution is in compliance with all pertinent regulations governing the use of animals in research, teaching, and testing. You will demonstrate excellent leadership, collaboration, and interpersonal skills to work successfully with a diverse audience to meet goals in a compassionate and sensitive manner.

Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:
  • Lead and facilitate the responsibilities of the IACUC Office, including those associated with reviewing, approving and overseeing animal activities to facilitate cutting edge, innovative biomedical research. Manages and mentors an IACUC Office team of four direct reports to coordinate and manage all committee meetings, Program and policy review, facility inspections, and off-sites.

  • Manage the entire protocol submission and approval process, including pre-review, IACUC DMR and FCR review, and collection and maintenance of review comments and communications. Serves as a primary point of contact for Research executives and leadership for the IACUC review process.

  • Collaboratively lead and manage inspections and site visits from regulatory agencies, such as USDA; includes coordinating and managing the AAALAC accreditation process as well as maintaining program accreditation.

  • Responsible for accurately organizing and compiling required data and documentations for oversight and accreditation agencies.

  • Serve as a principal point of contact for information regarding research compliance, provide expert knowledge of regulations governing research, and apply this knowledge to ensure the organization is in excellent standing and develops and implements strategies to maintain this excellence.

  • Serve as a primary point of contact for Bioinformatics to ensure all technical applications and databases are meeting the Program and business needs. Work collaboratively with programmers to perform testing of applications, trouble-shoot issues, and help create and develop enhancements.

  • May be asked to conduct special projects as assigned by the AV or IACUC Chair. May be asked to create and/or assist in the analysis or editing of reports, presentations, and policies. May be assigned to assist in various related roles for business continuity, as needed and determined by the Department Head.

  • This position requires time-sensitive, rigorous performance and deliverable deadlines and may require an irregular work schedule / evening / weekend / extended work hours.

Requirements:
  • Minimum related experience in IACUC regulatory compliance and lab animal science of 13 - 16 years with Bachelors in a related science; 10 - 13 years with Masters in a related science field; 7 - 10 years with PhD/DVM.
  • Minimum 3 years people management experience
  • Must be CPIA certified
  • Must be AALAS certified, LATG preferred, or possess a DVM or other related doctorate-degree in the industry
  • Exercises sound judgment and discretion in matters of significance
  • Excellent organizational, time management skills, and communication skills- both written and verbal

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of South San Francisco, California is $177,200 to $329,000. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. A discretionary annual bonus may be available based on individual and Company performance. This position also qualifies for the benefits detailed at the link provided below.
