The Office of International Affairs has an opening for a Full-time University Staff - Director of Global Education.

Nature of Work

The Office of International Affairs is seeking a Director for the Office of Global Education (OGE). The position is located within LynxConnect on the Auraria campus in downtown Denver and serves both the University of Colorado Denver campus (CU Denver) and the Anschutz Medical Campus (CU Anschutz).  The Office of Global Education, within the university's Office of International Affairs (OIA), oversees all student international travel experiences affiliated with CU Denver and CU Anschutz. This includes faculty-led programs, semester abroad programs, third-party provider programs, international rotations and practicum, international research, international internships, and other student international experiences for undergraduate and graduate students as well as medical residents. The Director of Global Education has primary responsibility for the development, growth, oversight, and promotion of high quality, high-impact education abroad experiences for CU Denver | Anschutz students. .

Supervision Received

This position reports to the Associate Vice Chancellor of the Office of International Affairs.

Supervision Exercised

This position supervises four professional exempt Global Education positions, two Program Managers and two Global Education Assistants, and may also supervise student workers. 

Examples of Work Performed 

Administration

  • Develop and implement OGE strategic goals and focus and facilitate the team's efforts to accomplish them.
  • Create and manage the OGE department budget.
  • Manage agreements with affiliate third-party providers and the study abroad aspects of foreign university partnerships.
  • Review institutional contracts and agreements approved for study abroad and exchanges
  • Oversee reporting on student participation, trends in study abroad, program evaluation, and strategies issues for university and external audiences.
  • Ensure ongoing collaboration with administrative offices including but not limited to the Bursar, Registrar, Financial Aid and Scholarships, Experiential Learning, Career Center, Undergraduate Research, etc. to enhance the study abroad experience and promote opportunities for learning.

Personnel Management and Supervision:

  • Provide day-to-day leadership and management of a high-performing team of international education professionals.
  • Oversee recruitment, hiring, orientation, training, supervision, and professional development of OGE staff.
  • Conduct annual performance evaluation process, ensuring consistent use of all applicable policies and procedures.
  • Proactively develop staffing plans that consider growth, career progressions for current staff, and Global Education trends.

Program Development and Delivery

  • Collaborate with CU Denver | Anschutz faculty, departments, colleges, and schools and with international partners/organizations to develop and sustain an array of high-quality, high-impact, study, research, internship, and experiential learning opportunities abroad that meet the educational needs and goals of CU Denver | Anschutz diverse student, faculty, and staff.
  • Work to fully integrate study abroad into CU Denver | Anschutz student learning and success including close coordination with offices at LynxConnect which provide student experiential opportunities.
  • Help faculty prepare to lead study abroad programs through effective orientation and pre-departure sessions which address student wellness and conduct, equity, risk management, emergency preparedness, and fiscal guidelines.
  • Develop and direct new and existing programs and partnerships from initial outreach and development stages through final program assessment and reporting in partnership with various internal and external stakeholders
  • Work with OIA Leadership, OIA Finance, and program leaders to create program budgets that ensure consistency and transparency in tuition and fees.
  • Develop, implement, and refine student pre-departure and re-entry sessions to continuously improve student preparation for their experience abroad as well as improve their re-acculturation and integration of their international experiences.
  • Manage a specific portfolio Of Global Education programs with unique characteristics.

Marketing and Scholarship Development

  • Develop successful marketing campaigns to actively promote CU Denver | Anschutz study abroad programs.
  • Promote and represent international experiences as an institutional educational priority by working closely with the Schools and Collegesand Strategic Enrollment and Student Success.
  • Collaborate with the Office of Advancement and academic units to strategize and execute scholarship initiatives that lower the financial barriers to student enrollment.

Risk Management

  • Serve as one of the incident managers for incidents occurring in international and U.S. territory locations.
  • Proactively manage international risk in collaboration with faculty leaders, OIA Operations, University Risk Management, the International Risk Management Committee, third-party providers, and the university's emergency health, security services provider and insurer.
  • Develop policies to support student success and minimize risk and liability by maintaining awareness and understanding of current domestic and global affairs related to travel health/safety/security, university policies, insurance policies, visa and immigration regulations, partner institutional policies, and the standards of best practices in the field of international education.

Other Duties

  • Establish and maintain professional networks and relationships with strategic national and international organizations and agencies and other professional higher education organizations related to international education and diversity.
  • Serve on university and system-wide committees, as needed.
  • Manage special projects and initiatives, as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Thorough knowledge of the study abroad field and its integration into the curriculum
  • Ability to manage faculty led study abroad programs from development to execution.
  • Ability to implement the Forum on Education Abroad Standards of Good Practice
  • Strong and engaged team leader
  • Knowledge of visa and international travel document requirements for outgoing and in-bound educational/student populations
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment while remaining attentive to detail
  • Ability to make decisions and recommend or take action in challenging and time-sensitive situations.
  • Knowledgeable in applying university, state and federal guidelines and policies 
  • Knowledgeable in how current trends in technology affect the study abroad field
  • Demonstrated intercultural and international awareness
  • In-depth knowledge Of Global trends and events
  • Knowledgeable in managing industry agreements and insurance policies
  • Ability to build effective working relationships among diverse constituencies

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Six years of progressively responsible experience in leadership and/or management roles including budget management
  • Two years of experience in international education at an institution of higher education
  • Two years of experience managing international health and safety incidents
  • Must be able to travel domestically and internationally.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in a field relevant to international education.
  • Previous experience as a Director or Assistant/Associate Director in a study abroad office at an institution of higher education
  • Proficient in a foreign language at an intermediate or higher level.
  • Experience living or studying abroad
  • Three years of experience working cooperatively with faculty or faculty-led study abroad programs
  • Participation in NAFSA, Forum for Education Abroad, Diversity Abroad, and/or other international education related professional organizations
  • Experience developing campus and international collaborations
  • Experience counseling students on international career opportunities

Salary and Benefits:

The salary range for this position has been established at $97,000 - $107,222 and is commensurate with skills and experience.

The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.

The above salary range represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting.

This position is not eligible for overtime compensation.
