Location: Primarily Main Campus, but any location assigned by the appropriate administrator
Job Purpose
The Director of Employee Relations is responsible for building and sustaining a positive work culture, managing Employee Relations issues, ensuring compliance with employment laws, and fostering a productive relationship between employees and the organization. The Director serves as a consultant to management on employee relation matters. The position formulates partnerships across the HR function to deliver value-added service to management and employees that reflect the business objectives of the College.
Position Description

  • Foster positive Employee Relations throughout the organization by identifying, developing, and driving philosophies and programs to improve employee engagement in the workplace.
  • Ensure consistent application of policies and procedures in guiding/consulting or reviewing complex Employee Relations concerns while leveraging the expertise of other stakeholders.
  • Ensures compliance with all local, state, and federal discrimination and employment regulations.
  • Lead internal investigations in compliance and employee-related matters, recommend solutions and assist with facilitation of resolution.
  • Coach employees and managers on work-related issues and make recommendations to help resolve complex and unique employment matters.
  • Manage the process for talent acquisition.
  • Directs the talent management process with a focus on establishing and implementing strategies and programs to facilitate professional development to promote continuous learning at the College.
  • Provide HR policy guidance and interpretation of policies and procedures. Recommend updates to policies and procedures as appropriate.
  • Implement, develop, and manage compliance training programs.
  • Gather information on employees' perceptions that affect employee morale, motivation & efficiency.
  • Coordinate the performance management and annual performance evaluation process.
  • Manage the unemployment claim process and represent the college at unemployment hearings, as necessary.
  • Serve as the Title IX Coordinator.
  • Other duties as assigned. 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Ability to comprehend, interpret and apply applicable state, federal, and local employment laws.
  • Demonstrated skill in conducting workplace investigations, negotiations, and conflict management.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality, integrity, and exercise discretion.
  • Excellent consultative skills and ability to communicate and collaborate effectively across varied stakeholder audiences including senior organizational leaders.
  • Demonstrated successful experience with constructive confrontation, conflict resolution, and analysis (problem assessment, solution generation).
  • Proven ability to work with minimal guidance, manage multiple priorities simultaneously and take initiative even under unfamiliar or ambiguous circumstances.
  • Ability to maintain a calm and composed demeanor during challenging circumstances.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication.
  • Strong Microsoft Office skills.

Position Qualifications and/or Education


Minimum Qualifications and/or Education

  • Bachelor's degree in human resources management, business administration, industrial organizational psychology, or a closely related field required.
  • Three (3) or more years of professional level Human Resource experience including employee/labor relations.

Preferred Qualifications and/or Education

  • Two (2) years of supervisory experience.
  • SPHR/PHR or SHRM-SCP/SHRM-CP certification.
  • Experience working in higher education.

Physical Requirements
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, talk, hear, walk, and sit. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally push or lift items.
Work Schedule
Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Must be able to work variable schedule/hours to meet operational needs. May require evening and weekend hours, frequent travel and must be able to work evening and weekend hours when required.
