Job description

POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the direction of the Associate Executive Director of Community Programming, and consistent with the Christian Mission of the YMCA, the Director of Community and Membership Initiatives will be responsible for the coordination, quality, safety, and execution of programs, events, and overnight stays designed to serve the surrounding community as well as increasing community participation in new and existing YMCA Camp Thunderbird offerings.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Design and lead programs, events, and other opportunities for YMCA members and the local community to engage with YMCA Camp Thunderbird.
  • Help promote new and existing programs in all departments within the community to increase participation and access.
  • Champion a culture of best-in-class program quality and experiences in all assigned areas.
  • Lead strategies to ensure members and/or program participants connect with each other and the YMCA.
  • Support development and management of annual budget within assigned areas. Demonstrate sound fiscal management skills.
  • Hire, train, and supervise a staff team to operate community programs.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Environmental Education, Conference and Retreats Director, and Sales & Service Coordinator to schedule YMCA Camp Thunderbird's staff, facilities, and resources appropriately.
  • Partner with Sales & Service Team to ensure that community programs help promote and maintain membership sales for YMCA Camp Thunderbird.
  • Ensure all supplies required for events are acquired, in good quality, and set up appropriately for all assigned areas.
  • Partner with facility team to ensure safety and maintenance of facilities, grounds and equipment to minimize risk to staff, participants and the Association.
  • Meet and exceed monthly and annual goals in assigned departments, including registration levels, year-over-year retention, penetration rates and participant progression.
  • Assume a key support role for summer operations.
  • Carry out all additional duties and special projects as assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Four-year college degree or equivalent experience in recreation, event planning or a related field.
  • Minimum of 2 years of successful program development, management, and evaluation.
  • Demonstrates ability to develop and execute short-term and long-term plans with a high degree of quality, effectiveness, and professionalism.
  • Successful experience supervising, guiding, developing and coaching staff.
  • Proven ability to demonstrate initiative, sound judgment and independent motivation and decision making.
  • Possess excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills, with ability to communicate effectively and professionally with diverse populations and all levels of management, employee, volunteers and members.
  • Able to maintain positive human relations and facilitate productive relationships with members, program participants, staff and volunteers.
  • Excellent organization skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills, as well as critical thinking ability.
  • Valid Driver's License
  • Attain Coast Guard Certification within 6 months of hire
  • Obtain and maintain current CPR & AED Certification

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to work in excess of a 40-hour week with irregular work hours.
  • Ability to walk, stand, and sit (including on the floor) for long periods of time.
  • Exposure to outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to stand or sit while maintaining alertness for several hours at a time.
  • Position may require bending, leaning, kneeling, and walking.
  • Ability to speak concisely and effectively communicate.
