Position Description:
The University of Minnesota Duluth Department of Music invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor - Director of Choral Activities to begin August 19, 2024. Duluth hosts a growing and thriving arts community in a landscape that balances small-town feel with big-city opportunities.
As Director of Choral Activities, you will teach undergraduate courses, conduct research, advise students, and serve the college, campus, university, discipline, and local community. Additional responsibilities include coordinating departmental programs and curriculum development.

  • Salary range: 52 - 57k with relocation expenses

Specific duties will be to conduct primary and secondary choral ensembles, instruct choral conducting and methods classes, advanced choral literature classes, and other courses in their area of expertise to a diverse group of undergraduate students as assigned by the department head. Preference will be given to those who have experience teaching ear training and applied voice in a variety of genres. Additionally, this individual will coordinate outreach, recruiting, and honor choir events.
Qualifications
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Doctorate in Music (DMA, DA, PhD, EdD) from a nationally accredited institution.
  • The doctorate must be completed no later than August 19, 2024.
  • Minimum of three years of full-time teaching experience in a public or private school
  • Minimum of two years postsecondary teaching experience

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Doctoral Degree in Choral Conducting from a nationally accredited institution.
  • Minimum of three years full-time secondary school choral teaching experience
  • Two or more years postsecondary choral teaching experience
  • Record of success teaching choral pedagogy in postsecondary institutions
  • Knowledge of healthy singing techniques
  • Keyboard/accompanying skills
  • Record of success recruiting students for choral music programs
  • Experience coordinating honor choir events
  • Evidence of scholarly/creative activities in choral performance, including publications in nationally recognized peer-reviewed journals

About the Department

The Department of Music comprises 120 undergraduate majors, offering Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Music Degrees. Music students and faculty play a leading role in offering cultural and artistic enrichment to the campus, community, and upper Midwest area through outreach and scholarly/creative activities. Ensembles include Symphony Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra, Wind Ensemble, Concert Band, Jazz Ensembles, University Singers, Chamber Singers, Concert Chorale and Vocal Jazz.
