Job description

The Department of Campus Safety at Shenandoah University is seeking qualified candidates for the Director of Campus Safety. This is a full-time (unarmed) benefited position located on our main campus in Winchester, VA. Under the direction of the Vice President of Administration & General Counsel, the Director of Campus Safety provides strategic and operational leadership for Shenandoah University’s safety and security operations and emergency preparedness in multi-campus settings. The Director of Campus Safety is responsible for establishing a vision, strategy, and direction of the university’s safety, security, and emergency preparedness programs, and provides technical guidance, training, and inspection/risk analysis services to faculty, staff and students to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local agency’s standards and regulations. The duties and responsibilities include planning, implementing, supervising, coordinating, monitoring, and evaluating the specific functions and services of the Department of Campus Safety, including operating policies, procedures, and methods.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Associate’s Degree or at least five years’ experience relating to university/college safety programs, emergency management, and/or occupational safety.
  • Demonstrated leadership and supervisory skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform under stress and intense pressure.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills demonstrating tact and diplomacy.
  • Valid driver’s license with clean driving record.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree, Criminal Justice, Psychology, Business, or a related field.
  • Extensive knowledge of federal, state, and local laws, policies, and procedures that promote Campus Safety.
  • Working knowledge of Clery Act and Title IX.
  • In-depth understanding of state and local government disaster recovery plans.
  • Demonstrated ability to implement a comprehensive emergency response plan.
  • Extensive knowledge of threat assessment protocol.

Essential Functions:

  • Position requires physical on campus presence - ineligible for remote duty.
  • Position requires on-call capability 24/7, 365 days a year.
  • Selected candidate responsible for responding to staff calls and implementing emergency management protocol.
  • Selected candidate will possess physical fitness as this position may require extensive walking, stair climbing, and other physical activities that may include but not be limited to, lifting, bending, kneeling, and jogging.
  • Candidate must be able to obtain Virginia Campus Safety Officer Certification, CPR, First Aid and AED certifications within 3 months of hire.
