Fremont School District 79 is seeking a Director of Buildings, Grounds, and Safety for the 2024-2025 school year.
REPORTS TO: Assistant Superintendent of Finance and Operations
WORK YEAR: 12-month position
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Prior experience in supervision,  facilities and custodial management, construction, and building security. 

  • A bachelor's degree is preferred, but equivalent experience and certification(s) will be considered. 

  • Five years relevant work experience, preferably in a K-8 educational environment.

  • Knowledge in site development, site surveys, needs assessments, public bid statutes, and budgeting.

  • Ability to effectively communicate orally and written with persons at all levels in the school community and community at large.


POSITION SUMMARY:

The Director of Buildings, Grounds, and Safety plays a crucial role in ensuring the optimal functioning and Safety of all facilities within Fremont School District 79. This leadership position involves overseeing the maintenance, operation, and security of Buildings and grounds. The Director is required to promote a positive attitude and create and maintain good working relationships with students, staff, and the community.

 

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

 
  • Provide leadership, supervision, and evaluation to department employees and day/night custodial services, including subcontractors.
  • Coordinate the District's capital budget, including monitoring assigned budgets, primarily in Fund 20.

  • Coordinate construction projects and act as the District's liaison with architects, engineers, and contractors.

  • In partnership with the superintendent of schools or designee, develop the Long Range Facilities Plan and work alongside architects and construction management as a team of experts to help guide the facilities planning process.

  • Oversee the direct purchasing and bid specifications for building modifications, supplies, equipment, and vehicles.

  • Review and analyze bids and provide recommendations to the Assistant Superintendent for Finance and Operations.

  • Supervise the District's health life safety program.

  • Supervise injury-related risk management, including coordination with appropriate departments and services.

  • Update and maintain the preventive maintenance programs for facilities, equipment, and vehicles.

  • Review, prioritize, and process work orders.

  • Regularly visit schools and support principals throughout the District.

  • Manage facility rentals, inventory, and fixed assets.

  • Serve on various committees related to safety, security, operations, maintenance, facilities, and risk management.

  • Oversee mail delivery throughout the district.

  • Attendance at Board meetings is required.

  • Attend to all other duties as assigned.

 

SAFETY AND SECURITY

 
  • Oversee the asbestos management program.

  • Oversee the integrated pest management program.

  • Monitor the indoor air quality program and response plan and serve on any related environmental committee.

  • Maintain security and program safety, including oversight of secure entryways, two-way radios, and fire alarms.

  • Serve as the liaison with the Department of Technology on multiple state-of-the-art investments in safety, security, facilities, & maintenance efforts.

  • Ensure compliance with all applicable, state, and local laws, rules, and regulations related to building security & safety and initiatives are consistent with the program's policies and procedures.

  • Develop and maintain cooperative relationships with local law enforcement and emergency response agencies.

  • Work with other administrators to facilitate the integration of effective safety and security practices into all classrooms and physical spaces.

 

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

 
  • Plan staff development programs that are in compliance with state, local, and federal laws in relationship to operations and facilities programs.

  • Train new staff in the department in areas related to operations and facilities.

  • Train leadership in areas related to operations and facilities.

  • Serve as a member of the Finance and Facility Committee.

 

RECRUITMENT AND SELECTION

 
  • Assist with the recruitment of staff for operations and facilities.

  • Select staff for vacancies that occur in the department in conjunction with the Human Resources Department.

 

COMMUNITY OUTREACH

 
  • Communicate with staff and administrators regarding building and operations that impact the delivery of instruction and instructional programs.

  • Communicate with other school districts regarding FSD79 buildings and grounds operations objectives to maintain collaborative partnerships.

  • Communicate with parents and other community members regarding operations and facilities.

  • Serve as a liaison to community organizations and attend meetings as appropriate.

 

SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE

 
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret documents such as blueprints, correspondence, surveys, and electronic media.

  • Ability to write professional communications.

  • Ability to present information effectively and respond to individual and group questions

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and community members.

  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in written form.

  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with various concrete variables in situations with limited standardization.

  • Ability to maintain current job skills as directed, especially in technology-related activities such as utilizing.

  • Google Drive, Microsoft Office, School Dude, and other relevant services used to support the daily functions of the District.

  • Ability to perform essential duties with an awareness of School District requirements and School Board policies.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:

 

The physical demands described here represent those that must be met by an employee to perform the essential functions of this job successfully. The pace of work tasks is fast. Work is usually conducted at multiple job sites, and this employee will be required to attend meetings, conferences, workshops, events, and tour school facilities. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, talk, and hear. The employee is frequently required to operate office and computer equipment, reach with hands and arms, and repeat actions with the same hand, arm, or finger motion. Specific vision abilities this job requires include close vision and the ability to adjust focus. In addition, the ability to withstand long-term use of computer monitors is required. 

 
  • The employee may occasionally lift up to 100 pounds.

 
  • Frequent driving is required.

  • The employee will be required to attend after-hour meetings as required.

  • The employee may be required to plow and manage a snow removal team.

  • The employee must be able to respond to emergencies that occur throughout the district 24/7.

  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. However, on occasion, the noise level will be high. Work is usually conducted indoors and outdoors. This work could be conducted at any school location.

  • The position requires meeting deadlines, interacting with the public and staff, and working irregular or extended work hours.


EVALUATION:

Performance of this position will be evaluated in accordance with the District evaluation model.
