JOB SUMMARY
The Director, Human Resources is a member of the Talent and Human Resources Team preferably located in Tulsa, OK. Washington, DC candidates are also welcome to apply if able to travel to Tulsa at least 25%. Schusterman has developed a comprehensive Talent Lifecycle Framework to reflect our continued investment in the recruitment, engagement, development, and retention of our professional team. The Director will focus on the "Retain" pillar leading a team of four professionals in compensation and benefits areas to ensure team members-350+ across all Schusterman entities-feel recognized and valued for their contributions. The Director, Human Resources will work in partnership with Schusterman leadership and other key stakeholders to develop strategies, initiatives, and tools to retain our valued staff.
RESPONSIBILITIES
This position is a key leadership role on the Talent and HR team. Job responsibilities will include, but not be limited to:
Compensation Strategy, Development and Implementation (30%)
Outcome: The Director will oversee Schusterman's compensation programs to ensure we retain the best qualified and diverse talent. Team members will clearly understand our compensation strategy as it aligns with our philanthropic vision, values, operational strategies, and culture and see it represented throughout the entire compensation process. This position also partners with leaders on Investment Team and Samson Energy Company while overseeing these entities' compensation plans (approximately 175+ team members in total).
  • Oversee the development, implementation, and administration of compensation programs.
  • Manage compensation planning process, including benchmarking.
  • Partner and support Executive Leadership Team throughout our compensation planning cycle.
  • Refine our organization's Compensation Philosophy and practice for maximum clarity and equity.
  • Equip managers for compensation conversations and support managers when communicating where team members are situated in a salary band and why.
  • Oversee the participation in compensation surveys, including peer surveys. Monitor survey data to inform decisions on possible plan changes.
  • Analyze and interpret compensation data and effectively communicate to leadership any recommended changes to salary bands.
  • Partner with Recruitment Team and review all offers for internal equity.
  • Consult with our internal legal counsel on employment laws, compliance, contracts, and agreements.
  • Track and analyze metrics to increase retention of valued staff and reduce turnover.
  • Responsible for Energy entity's compensation planning, including administration of UAR plan and non-qualified deferred compensation plan.
  • Provide HR business partner support to Chief Investment Officer, including hiring needs, compensation, terminations, and general support.

Benefits Strategies (25%)
Outcome: Oversee benefits plan design, analysis, and administration, including enhancements and changes to remain market competitive. This position oversees benefits for 350+ staff, including Schusterman Family Philanthropies, Investment Team, Samson Energy Company, and Granite Properties, Inc.
  • Oversee Benefits Team for managing core benefits, retirement and leave plans, and all benefits programs and perks.
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to Chief Talent Officer while managing policy and benefits compliance and administration.
  • Understand what benefit enhancements are most important-and equitable-to team members. Explore key benefits enhancements and recommend any benefits design changes.
  • Partner with legal counsel on latest policy changes.
  • Partner with benefits broker, EPIC, to obtain the best prices while maintaining quality benefits offerings from vendors during annual renewal process.
  • Manage participation in several benefits surveys for receiving results to inform our decisions.
  • Prepare and submit annual benefits proposal and budget for final approval.
  • Deliver enhancements through annual Open Enrollment.

Employee Relations (20%)
Outcome: The Director, Human Resources will partner with the Chief Talent Officer, other Talent and HR Directors, managers, and legal counsel for managing employee relations situations.
  • Provide strategic guidance to managers for resolving challenging and complex employee relations issues.
  • Partner with manager and legal counsel on labor laws and legal matters about employment. Seek guidance from legal counsel to resolve certain complaints or disputes.
  • Advise managers on appropriate disciplinary actions to ensure consistency and fairness.
  • Develop and educate management by gathering facts, diagnosing problems, providing solutions, and offering objective assistance and guidance on employee-related issues.
  • Conduct thorough and objective investigations, as necessary.

Human Resources Processes, Systems, and Administration (25%)
Outcome: The Director, Human Resources will build and maintain ongoing relationships with key vendors and fulfill other administration responsibilities as required while Talent and HR continues to change and evolve.
  • Strategically build vendor relationships to support the above activities.
  • Assess and evolve vendor relationships to ensure that they are equitable.
  • Partner with Payroll Director to manage efficiency of HRIS system, UKG.
  • Oversee Charitable Giving platform, Blackbaud, to ensure integrity of team member's match requests, Cause Cards, and employer match of contributions.
  • Provide internal team support as administrator in SharePoint/Teams for our team's channels and libraries. Responsible for ensuring confidentiality of private team documents while publishing documents intended for all staff's access.
  • Provide oversight for administering onboarding and offboarding staff through Greenhouse and UKG software. Ensure that equity is embedded into onboarding and offboarding processes.
  • Approve HR invoices and reimbursement requests up to $20k approval level.
  • Manage and respond to all unemployment claims through Equifax system.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
The following qualifications are representative of the high level of demonstrated skills, maturity, judgment, and ability to work with a wide range of constituencies required of Schusterman employees:
  • 10+ years of professional experience in compensation, benefits, and employee relations.
  • A Bachelor's degree, with an emphasis in Human Resources or Business preferred or comparable experience.
  • Proven experience in a senior HR leadership role, with expertise in the full spectrum of Talent/HR functions.
  • Previous professional experience in non-profit/philanthropic space preferred.
  • Training in (and hands-on experience with) compensation planning, benefits design and management and employee relations. Certification in SHRM-SCP or SHRM-CP, World at Work (CCP or CBP) preferred.
  • Experience managing team members toward meaningful outcomes.
  • High degree of discretion and judgment with proven success as a people leader and influencer.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to adapt communication styles across multiple stakeholders and facilitate productive conversations.
  • Experience operating in a matrixed environment with a track record of building relationships, being viewed as a trusted partner and collaborator, and leading through diplomatic influence rather than formal authority.
  • Advanced knowledge of and ability to develop benefits design, systems, and strategies.
  • Experience with integrating Race, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (REDI) strategies into Compensation and Benefits work.
  • Strong analytical skills, with a track record of using data and metrics to evaluate needs, drive change and measure impact.
  • Experience in change management and creating alignment with a diverse set of employees.
  • PC skills (with proficiency in SharePoint, Teams, Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint), as well as a thorough knowledge and comfort of basic web skills required. Experience with UKG Pro (UltiPro) a plus.
  • Ability to travel up to 5% domestically; if based in DC, at least 25% travel to Tulsa.

COMPENSATION
Competitive hiring range of $170,000-$208,000 based on experience and Schusterman's commitment to internal equity. A strong benefits package is also included. Schusterman encourages ongoing professional development and supports activities aligned with one's individual career growth plan. Schusterman does not cover relocation expenses for this position.
