Overview

The Environment Director, in accordance with overall corporate objectives, directs all activities in the areas of environmental compliance and community relations. The incumbent develops, implements, and administers programs designed to assure the highest standards attainable to protect the environment and comply with all applicable regulations. The incumbent will also ensure the community of the company’s value as a good corporate neighbor by overseeing activities that supports a good standing in the community, sustainable operations, and adheres to and upholds all company policies, safety standards and federal / state regulations.

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Serves as liaison with Federal, State and Local regulators and responsible for ensuring proper reporting and compliance with requirements mandated by local, state, and federal regulations as well as internal standards.
  • Manage all aspects of planning and reporting activities including assisting in the development and implementation of policies, procedures, and systems assuring the environmental integrity of the facility; conducting internal audits and implement environmental best practices.
  • Evaluates alternative fuels and raw materials for environmental compliance, special permitting needs, etc.
  • Coordination and engagement of environmental personnel and other personnel in the identification, development and implementation of environmental goals which will positively impact and add value to the organization while championing environmental sustainability goals.
  • Will investigate, and report environmental incidents, compiling findings, and recommendations for corrective action, this information will be placed into a monthly summary report. Acts as lead in coordinating corrective actions required to address environmental problems.
  • Retains and evaluates providers of outside expertise as necessary and supervises consultant activities.
  • Reviews new construction and equipment from environmental compliance point-of-view.
  • Maintains permit file, completes applications or renewals as required and oversees completion of all required reports on certification, recertification, and compliance testing of stack emissions and emissions monitoring equipment, emissions, discharges, etc.
  • Recommends pollution control and/or monitoring equipment. Supervises installation, certification, calibration, maintenance, etc.
  • Directs all activities related to underground storage tanks, hazardous waste, recycling, and waste minimization.
  • Serves as part of quarry permitting team and assists in other quarry-related activities.
  • Utilize Environmental Management System, maintain environmental dashboard and calendar of compliance tasks.
  • Represents the plant at regulatory hearings, legal actions, and legislative meetings.
  • Follows trends in environmental regulations, keeping plant current and ready for implications from changes.
  • Handles community complaints and inquiries on environmental matters (dust, odor, blasting, etc.).
  • Develops and administers community relations programs which affect and improve the public's perceptions of the company; Serves as primary liaison between the company and local governing boards, community groups, citizens, and media.
  • Communicates corporate objectives, activities, and achievements.
  • Authors presentations, letters, and articles, and assists other employees in similar presentations. Prepares employee newsletter/bulletins.
  • Other duties may be required and will be assigned as necessary.

Ability, Skills & Knowledge

  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental sciences, Engineering, or closely related field with 5 or more years' proven experience (ideally in cement or construction materials industry)
  • Must have a high level of integrity and commitment to comply with all applicable federal / state / industry compliance, record keeping regulations and standards
  • Strong Interpersonal capabilities with ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing, while building rapport with team members across functions/operating units and influencing at all levels of the organization
  • Financial – P&L exposure, basic understanding of plant manufacturing costs and basic understanding of Operational Excellence and Continuous Improvement activities
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suites with accurate data entry skills and strong data visualization skills
  • Able to travel as required with or without notice
  • Due to the nature of this position, it is essential that the teammate be available to report to the designated work site / office and be ready to begin work when scheduled,
  • Must be able to pass pre-employment screening which may include a physical, background check, and drug screen.
