Paylocity has a deep history of providing innovative HR software solutions to customers that scale with their business. As part of that history, most of our products are currently served through bare metal hypervisors that reside in several Data Centers across the US. With workload volume growing rapidly, and traffic patterns for many of our products that fit a profile suitable to Cloud infrastructure, Paylocity is pursuing a hybrid cloud strategy. The company is 10% through a multi-year transition to a modern technology stack for many of its key product lines.

We’re hiring a Cloud Infrastructure Engineering Director who will lead a Cloud Infrastructure team comprised of two business units. The first is the Cloud Center of Expertise (CCOE) which is staffed by senior Cloud Architects who facilitate the migration of applications to AWS (via the 5 R methodology), own our Green Field landing zones and lead the Architecture Review Board. The second team is an internal platform team that designs and supports commonly held infrastructure components including SQS, Eventing, EKS and CDN among others.

This position requires a hands-on leader, with a blend of cloud migration experience and a history of running modern SaaS applications on public Cloud Infrastructure. The Director of Cloud Infrastructure Engineering will collaborate across the organization to build and communicate the cloud migration plan, ensure the use of modern architectural patterns and work through the team to build repeatable infrastructure components that scale with the business. The role supports the Cloud Infrastructure Engineering managers to build a culture that creates a sense of belonging and drives high performance to ensure people of all backgrounds can thrive.

About You

• We’re looking for a highly collaborative Engineering leader (manager of managers) who will lead multiple teams through a relationship first style, in a remote first environment
• You are a supportive mentor and coach for engineering managers of various levels of experience
• You have led a migration from Data Center to a major Cloud provider before and have insight into how to avoid common pitfalls and challenges as the migration progresses
• You have been responsible for running a major SaaS application before as a second line manager of a Cloud Engineering, Infrastructure or SRE team

What You'll Do

• Lead a team of managers (with an org size of 35 people) responsible for the Cloud migration, the Cloud Architecture Review Board, AWS Landing Zones and our growing infrastructure footprint
• Accelerate our path to the Cloud by partnering through all aspects of our migration; from collaborating to set the migration timetable and creating success criteria, to ensuring infrastructure requirements are clear and are successfully translated into immutable infrastructure
• Act as executive sponsor of the Architecture Review Board (ARB) and advocate for ongoing adoption of the AWS Well Architected Framework, cloud native solutions, fault tolerant systems and high levels of observability
• Establish a new FinOps practice in partnership with Finance, Product and Engineering to ensure infrastructure costs are optimized and aligned with where customers get value from the product
• Continuously raise the standard of excellence within our Cloud Center of Excellence (CCOE) by making iterative improvements to our AWS landing zones, tagging strategy, base images, multi-regional configuration and security posture
• Guide the team towards innovative self-service infrastructure capabilities including environments and tools can be created with a click through our Developer Portal (Backstage)
• Cultivate a culture of high performance, where all roles and employees, regardless of background, feel a sense of belonging and have the opportunity thrive

Ideal technical Background

• Hands-on experience with AWS (or another major Cloud Service Provider)
• Good understanding of various architectural patterns like SOA and Microservices and the related advantages and trade-offs
• Experience helping teams translate the AWS Well Architected Framework into actionable roadmaps
• Experience leading teams that build and manage Cloud Infrastructure using various Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools
• Experience with observability and monitoring tools such as Datadog, Lightstep, Grafana/ Prometheus etc
• Deep experience leading teams that operate a containerized environment, orchestrated by k8s with high volume workloads
• Well versed in the design and development of API based platforms
• Experience with (or desire to) engage and give back to the FinOps Foundation Community as we build our FinOps practice

This role can be performed from any office in the US. The pay range for this position is $185,000 - $260,000 /yr; however, base pay offered may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. This position is eligible for an annual bonus and restricted stock unit grant based on individual performance in addition to a full range of benefits outlined here.
