The General Counsel's Organization (GCO) at American Express is seeking a Director & Counsel to support the Regulatory, Banking, Insurance, Privacy & Data Law Team within the Global Enterprise Services group. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing day-to-day legal and strategic advice on key Bank Regulatory issues of importance to American Express and American Express National Bank. This position requires regularly navigating novel business and legal issues across a broad range of matters and working seamlessly with colleagues on a global basis.

It also provides the opportunity to contribute to a host of strategic projects and to collaborate with colleagues across business units and the GCO on significant enterprise initiatives. Here's just some of what you'll do in this role: Inform and advise GCO leadership and other leaders across the enterprise on legal and regulatory developments of importance to American Express; Support American Express National Bank on the interpretation of and compliance with key prudential banking laws and regulations including Regulation W and Regulation O; Provide legal and strategic advice on bank and bank holding company governance matters; Partner closely with leadership of the Global Risk & Compliance Organization to advise on regulatory matters; Participate on a small team of seasoned attorneys, offering thought leadership for, and engagement on, cross-subject matter practice group issues and strategic projects Collaborate with colleagues and leaders within the GCO and other groups; and Routinely engage directly with internal clients and senior leaders across the enterprise to ensure the most effective support and relevant expertise is applied to particular matters. Qualifications: J.D. with admission to practice law in New York or Washington, D.C.

6+ years of relevant work experience in a law firm and/or in-house corporate legal environment Interest in developing a deep understanding of business needs and objectives with a close partnership with business clients Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with passion for generating creative and innovative solutions Ability to communicate complex issues clearly and persuasively, in both written and oral format, and to synthesize complex issues Excellent collaboration and teamwork skills and ability to work well in cross-functional team settings Ability to manage and prioritize competing demands while maintaining high attention to detail and meeting deadlines Ability to understand and integrate details of business / enterprise environment and priorities in applying legal and policy requirements Intellectually curious and self-motivated, high level of personal energy and commitment Additional Preferred Qualifications: Strong experience with U.S. prudential Bank Regulatory matters Experience working with banks, payment networks, financial institutions Strong executive presence and ability to influence stakeholders Demonstrated ability to build excellent relationships Willingness and flexibility to be a team player and take on new responsibilities and challenges Strong interest and/or experience in digital products and emerging technology Excellent oral and written communication skills Salary Range: $170,000.00 to $255,000.00 annually + bonus + equity (if applicable) + benefits The above represents the expected salary range for this job requisition.
