Job description

St. Norbert College, a nationally-ranked, private, Catholic, liberal arts college is seeking a Dining Services Maintenance Specialist responsible for performing preventative maintenance and mechanical repairs on all food service equipment. This position also coordinates the work of external vendors including plumbers, electricians and others; and keeps records for all food service equipment. This role also sources and inventories parts, researches new equipment and coordinates equipment installation and deep cleaning projects.
Regular work hours are variable depending on needs, but generally M – F, 7:00 am – 3:30 pm. This position works on campus with multiple interruptions throughout the day. Urgent repairs will require on-call evening and weekend availability.

Specific responsibilities:

Troubleshoots, repairs, and maintains food service equipment in all Dining Services operations. Cleans exhaust hoods, replaces fan motors, and keeps all equipment in top condition. Installs new equipment, helps managers with preventative maintenance schedules. Performs extensive urgent maintenance repairs as well as scheduled preventative maintenance. Safely maintains the physical environment of Dining spaces. - 75%

Leads the work of food service equipment projects and maintenance of dining unit physical spaces. Works in conjunction with Facilities Department plumbers, electricians, mechanics, HVAC specialists and other staff when partnering on large jobs. This includes but is not limited to: space renovations or upgrades, equipment research, equipment purchases, new vendors, as well as researching manufacturers of specific needs for chefs and managers. Works with multiple vendors to provide repair and new equipment quotes. - 10%

Administers Work Order system for Dining Services.  Responsible for keeping up to date repair logs, and part cost logs. Meets and works with all vendors on campus for deliveries and repairs. - 10%

Assists as needed in organizing and physically helping in the unloading of large pallets.  Uses forklifts and dollies in these situations; schedules Dining Services inspections including ANSUL equipment, fire extinguishers, etc. - 5%

Performs additional duties as assigned and attend College required training. Regular attendance is required. Work in a manner that is aware of personal safety and the safety of others and observes safety, health and sanitation codes, regulations, or practices required by the College or governmental authority.

Required Minimum Qualifications:
Education -    

  • High School Diploma or equivalent

  • Associates degree or equivalent experience in mechanics preferred

Experience and Credentials -

  • 3-5 years experience in food service operations

  • Able to obtain Forklift Certification within 6 months of hire

  • 2-3 years experience in general maintenance with experience in food service equipment maintenance preferred.

  • Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse campus environment or commitment to do so as an employee of St. Norbert College.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities -

  • Mechanical aptitude a must

  • Knowledge of mechanical maintenance principles. 

  • Knowledge of sanitation principles for food service. 

  • Ability to work in a fast paced environment.

  • Ability to translate user manual language for lay person and also be able to understand manufacturer specs, etc.

  • Ability to interact professionally with coworkers and customers, particularly in conflict situations.

  • Ability to talk politely and resolve customer service issues.

  • Ability to multitask, meet specific deadlines, and prioritize tasks and assignments.

  • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing.

  • Skilled in basic math computations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

  • Ability to exercise good judgment and decisions in an expeditious manner.

  • Skilled at setting a good example for others. 

  • Ability to concentrate and focus in a noisy environment.

Equipment Used:

Equipment used in maintenance repairs; drills, screwdrivers, ladders, flashlights, cleaning supplies/equipment. Computer, phone, calculator, printer/copier, and other general office equipment.  Maintenance equipment used to do general repairs

  • Generally a position walking, standing, bending over, crawling, and pushing/pulling throughout the day. Lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling 10 lbs below waist frequently, up to 50 lbs occasionally, and up to 75 lbs below the waist on a limited basis.  Lifting above the waist up and carrying at waist level up to 25 lbs occasionally. Will need to move within building and work in tight spaces and in awkward positions.
