Job description

R&D Engineering Director – Digital RF/WIRELESS

Fairwinds is looking for innovators who can successfully execute across multiple disciplines as part of a small business environment. An ideal candidate would be an out of the box thinker, develop innovative solutions, and provide expertise in an IP connected environment across Wireless Tactical Military to strategic border protection. This would include experience in communications systems engineering including FPGA/GPU full Stack Waveform and Software Defined Radio Platform Development. Work Directly with the VP of Engineering & Chief Technology Officer to define internal R&D Investment and develop multiple solutions for customers across the communications spectrum. Digital Signal Processing, SDR Board Design, RF Performance Testing & Configuration experience a priority. Looking for someone that has the ability to interact with both customers & engineering design teams to identify current issues and correct those to the customers satisfaction.


Required Skills:

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical, Computer, or Systems Engineering
  • 5 years’ experience in Communications Electronic PCB Engineering Experience.
  • 5 years’ experience with Applying Digital Signal Processing techniques within FPGAs/DSPs/ASICs
  • 5 years’ experience leading engineering teams to develop custom communications based SDR Waveforms
  • Understanding of RF Propagation Theory
  • Understanding of Mobile Adhoc Networks
  • Active Secret or higher DoD Security Clearance
  • Ability to not shy away from technical challenges and an approach of how it can be done, not how it can't be done.
  • Ability to work independently and up to 75% remote and have the ability to travel.
  • Ability to brief Senior Leadership with experience briefing C-level officers on technical matters.
  • Experience with SATCOM, Terrestrial Wireless/Radio Systems, and Cisco Routers.
  • Experience with TAP, Signal Pro or equivalent for conducting LOS link modeling
  • Experience with MATLAB & Simulink
  • Experience writing Technical White Papers


Additional Experience in these areas is a plus:

  • Master of Electrical, Systems, or Computer Engineering – Or equivalent
  • 10 years’ experience in development of SDR Radios & Waveforms.
  • 10 years’ experience with Wireless Communication Systems including MANET and 4G/5G.
  • 5 years’ experience developing digital beamforming solutions
  • 5 years’ experience developing Electronically steered Phased Array antenna systems.
  • Familiarity with Networking (TCP/IP, UDP, DNS, DHCP, General Knowledge of Routing Protocols)
  • Familiarity with DSP Virtualization / emulation.
  • Experience with iPerf, Wireshark, MGEN, IXIA, or equivalent test tools
  • Understanding of DoD Transmission and Networking Architectures
  • C/ C++/ C#


Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

This is a full time, exempt position.

Work Authorization/Security Clearance

Must be a U.S citizen with the ability to possess a valid US DoD security clearance.
