SPANISH DIGITAL LITERACY AND ESL - INSTRUCTOR
Position Title: Skills Instructor/ Employment Counselor, Bilingual English & Spanish
Classification: Full-Time Non-exempt Work Schedule: 40 hours per/wk

About the Department and Role
The Skills Instructor/Employment Counselor position is integral to our community-based programming success and JobTrain's more than 58 years of continuous expansion. This role is essential to reaching communities who need our programs and services on their path through economic mobility as they strive for economic freedom. In addition, this position has shared responsibility for continuing to keep JobTrain on the cutting edge of workforce development in California and nationwide. This role requires bilingual fluency in both English and Spanish. This role will require instruction and counseling in-person. Some work from home flexibility may be considered for those applying from the SF Bay area.
Position Descriptions
Digital Literacy Instruction: The Instructor develops training and reference materials for and delivers in-person and remote instruction to Learners on fundamental basic computer skills (including Microsoft Windows, Google Apps, Navigating the Internet, social media, and other online meeting and communication tools). The position requires a dynamic and energetic candidate passionate about teaching adult learners, including those with limited IT skills and barriers to employment, and developing and delivering in-person, video-based, recorded, and printed training in both English and Spanish.
ESL Instruction: The Instructor must be familiar with various teaching methodologies and be patient in their approach. The Instructor develops training and reference materials for and delivery in-person and at remote instruction. The Instructor works with English Learners to increase their proficiency with comprehension, written and spoken English. Instruction involves using pictures, demonstrations, repetition, and role play. The Instructor must be able to assign project topics to Learners and assess their performance. Good analytical skills will be required in evaluating Learner progress. In addition, the Instructor must have an excellent command of the English language and a demonstrated level of patience.
Employment Counseling: The Employment Counselor advises and coaches Learners in developing their employment and economic mobility plans. Responsibilities include developing long and short-term strategies and solutions; meeting the learners where they are; identifying and understanding the Learners' needs; and working with them to develop solutions to address their issues and needs. In addition, the Employment Counselor develops a plan and milestones for Learners to keep them on track and motivated to continue their skills development while working towards their goals.
Class instruction and support activities: This position is based at our Menlo Park headquarters Monday - Friday. Instruction is online for remote learning. Some labs, office hours, and employment counseling services may require in-person meetings at community locations. While limited work from home flexibility may be offered, this is not a remote role.
Responsibilities:
  • Follow the Technology Standards & Curriculum to ensure coursework supports acquiring basic skills.
  • Collaborate with curriculum developers and other instructors to develop lesson plans and instructional materials to meet the skills development of the Learners.
  • Design authentic learning experiences that develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to be effective in today's work environment.
  • Assess Learners' progress and performances and maintain accurate progress and attendance records.
  • Refer Learners to advanced classes, Academic Center for skills upgrade classes, career pathway training, and/or community college for additional support.
  • Employ a variety of instructional techniques and instructional media consistent with the physical limitations of the location provided and the needs and capabilities of the individuals or Learner groups involved.
  • Facilitate and teach workshops and computer classes in computer and internet fundamentals, specific computer applications, and accessing and understanding specific computer functions.
  • Provide one-on-one Digital Literacy support for participants in person, online, and through laboratory support.
  • Refer Learners to ESL classes, Academic Center for skills upgrade classes, career pathway training, and or adult schools, and community college for additional support.
  • Assist with Learner recruitment, Learner registrations, and special events such as graduation and other class-based celebrations.
  • Provide work readiness employment counseling and follow-up with Learners.
  • Provide employment counseling, career, and job development counseling and coaching with a diverse Learner base.
  • Actively involve the Learners in the design and delivery of economic mobility strategy by ensuring they have an active voice in their goal/service plans.
  • Assist participants in assessing their job skills for positions; administer and score standard career assessments.
  • Use a case management model of service, provide intake, assessment, concrete assistance, referral to appropriate services, and ongoing monitoring of status for clients of the Adult Services program to assist clients in achieving the maximum functioning ability.
  • Drive your own or agency vehicle to the field and other program sites, as required; document and report mileage according to agency procedures so that services are provided in a timely manner; always comply with agency vehicle policy.
  • Attend and participate in all staff meetings, training, and employment counseling conferences, as assigned.
Qualifications:

Experience:
Digital Literacy and ESL Instructors must have the following knowledge, skills, and abilities. Reasonable accommodation will be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions.
  • A (2) year post-secondary training college degree/diploma in English Language, English Literature, Education, or related fields; or adult ESL teaching experience; or up to 3 years of work experience as an ESL Teacher, English Teacher, or a similar position.
  • Teaching experience with low-literacy adult language learners is preferred.
  • Bi-lingual instruction experience is required in English and Spanish.
  • Excellent employment counseling skills, experience, and an understanding of the adult learner population and how they learn.
  • Proven strengths-based career and job development counseling and/or coaching with a diverse client base.
  • Knowledge of job development and workforce development strategies.
  • Excellent communication skills in English are required.
  • Excellent interpersonal, problem-solving, analytical, and organizational skills.
  • Knowledge of various teaching techniques and methodologies.
Work Conditions
Classes are offered virtually; however, some Learner support, office hours, and employment counseling services may occur at remote housing community facilities locations.

Compensation and Benefits
JobTrain offers a competitive pay ($29.90 - $40.46/hour) and generous benefits package including affordable health insurance, dental insurance, vision, paid vacation, paid sick time, paid holidays, paid floating holidays, retirement program with employer match, long-term disability, life insurance and employee assistance program (EAP.)
While the full range for this role is listed above, the hiring range is likely to be $29.90 - $35.18 based upon various factors including budgeted funds, internal equity, and relevant experience.
