At a Glance! The Diesel/Heavy Equipment Technology Faculty is a full-time faculty tenure track position responsible for teaching in the Diesel/Heavy Equipment Technology program at Lower Columbia College. We are looking for a skilled, student-centered, passionate, and collaborative faculty to join our program!
The Diesel/Heavy Equipment Technology Faculty teaches courses related to essentials of mechanics, electrical systems, vehicle climate control, hydraulics, diesel engine rebuild, high performance drive trains, advanced shop practices, and may include commercial truck driving. This position also involves maintenance of program shop equipment and training aides, student advising, participation in departmental responsibilities, and other related professional activities.
LCC offers both a certificate and degree that prepares students for careers in any industry that utilizes trucks, heavy equipment, vessels, or other industrial equipment utilizing diesel power, hydraulics, or other mechanical power transmission devices. About the Team! This position will join a team of faculty, staff and administration who are collaborative, innovative, and supportive. The environment is team-orientated and adaptive to respond to industry trends and align with local workforce needs. Courses are delivered primarily in-person and/or hybrid utilizing LCC's online learning management system to complement the hands-on instruction.

The faculty position is 173 contract days (fall, winter, spring) with an anticipated start of September 2024. Courses are delivered through multiple modalities including online, hybrid, and in-person. Teaching may include evenings and weekends or at remote locations. The salary range is $70,199 to $92,448 based on education and experience. (Please note the salary amount within this posting is reflective of the 2023-24 salary amounts and does not include any legislatively funded COLA for the 2024-25 year). The Diesel/Heavy Equipment Faculty reports to the Dean of Instructional Programs.

Examples of Duties & Responsibilities
  • Demonstrate expertise, enthusiasm, and professionalism in the instruction of Diesel/Heavy Equipment related instruction and effective assessment and repair techniques to students.
  • Conduct classroom lectures, lab work and projects to prepare students with current industry required skills for entry-level employment.
  • Maintain an effective, safe, and respectful learning environment.
  • Ensure that appropriate safety practices are used at all times; students are knowledgeable of safety techniques and personal protective equipment; and that all equipment and machines are in safe working order.
  • Effectively maintain currency of content (including syllabi), and prepare, and present materials to a diverse student population with various learning styles and abilities.
  • Assess, evaluate, and document student learning and achievement of course competencies and outcomes.
  • Provide verbal and written feedback to students in a timely manner including the grading of assignments.
  • Utilize technology and online programs including use of Canvas, LCC's Learning management system, to enhance student learning (training for the online management system is available)
  • Provide individualized support to promote student success.
  • Effectively interact with supervisors, colleagues, staff, and students. Build and maintain professional relationships with local school districts and industry partners to strengthen program advisory committees.
  • Assist in student recruitment and institutional program marketing efforts.
  • Uphold LCC policies, procedures, expectations, and standards.
  • Provide academic advising to students.
  • Establish and maintain regular office hours; be available for student consultation.
  • Perform ongoing program and college service and assessment activities.
  • Participate in department and college activities and meetings.
  • Participate in ongoing professional development to remain current with industry standards. Maintain vocational certification required for higher education instructors.
  • Teaching assignment may include instruction for the Commercial Truck Driving program.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Typical Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
  • Associate or Technical Degree in Diesel/Heavy Equipment AND two (2) years recent experience as a diesel mechanic/technician in a shop and /or field environment; OR training and experience resulting in the equivalent of journeyman status.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in small groups and as a team.
  • Demonstrated ability to work, collaborate and interact effectively with individuals who represent a broad spectrum of ages, abilities, ethnicity, education, and cultural backgrounds.
  • Ability to obtain a CDL (Commercial Driver's License). If the CDL credential is not held at the time of hire, the incumbent will have two calendar years after the initial employment date to become certified.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelors degree in Diesel Technology, Business Management, Organizational Leadership or closely related field.
  • One-year of supervisory experience.
  • Currently held CDL.
  • 4+ years' experience as a diesel mechanic/technician in a shop and /or field environment.
  • Experience with technology and computers including familiarity with common application programs such as Google and Microsoft Outlook/Word/Excel.
  • Prior teaching or training experience in a vocational setting.
