Requirements
- Performs duties that are required to prepare the equipment and supplies for the dialysis treatments.
- Cleans, disinfects and rinses dialysis machines according to protocol.
- Prepares machines for hemodialysis treatments, including checking alarms and conductivity.
- Troubleshoots machine alarms.
- Safely operates all dialysis-related equipment.
- Reports machine problems to equipment technician and charge nurse.
- Is familiar with all emergency equipment and all emergency operational procedures.
- Performs duties to assist with the care of the patient as directed by RN.
- Takes vitals and obtains weights of the patients.
- Prepares supplies for hemodialysis.
- Monitors patients during dialysis treatments.
- Report any significant information or change in patient condition to the Charge Nurse as outlined in safety parameters.
- Responsible for accurate and timely documentation of information related to patient treatment. This information is documented by the technician in the appropriate patient record.
- Is able to recognize changes in patients’ status from one treatment to another.
- Disinfect all necessary equipment including bicarbonate containers, hemostats and patient clamps as directed per facility protocol.
- Stocks hemodialysis carts. Uses efficient, cost effective practices with inventory control and resource use.
- Understands and follows prescribed parameters for reporting to RN.
- Maintains a safe and clean working environment.
- Actively participates in unit staff meetings and in-services.
- Seeks resources for direction when necessary.
- Performs additional duties and is responsible for specific projects that are assigned according to ability and experience, by the Administrator, Supervising Nurse, Charge Nurse or RN.
- Must be able to push and pull heavy medical equipment (on wheels) weighing up to 200 pounds on a daily basis.
- Must be capable of verifying visual and audio alarms on machines.
- Must be able to occasionally lift up to 30 pounds.
- Must have full range of body motion and flexibility.
- Must have ability to climb, reach, kneel, stoop, and bend on a daily basis.
- Must comply with all hospital personnel policies.
- Mixes bicarbonate according to protocol.
- Assist in patient care-plan meetings when appropriate.
- Provides in-service education to employees as directed.
- Able to initiate, monitor, and discontinue dialysis treatment for four patients unassisted per shift.
- Performs Primary Care Technician duties.
- Is able to open and close the facility independently; including the water treatment room.
- Takes call as assigned.
- Able to recognize variables in treatment and patients that are different from the usual.
- Participates in Lab activities as assigned.
- Contributes to investigations, and solutions for unit occurrences with patients and general problems.
- Assists with disruptive and non-compliant patients.
- Leads team projects.
- Reviews policy and procedures as assigned and reports back to management team.
- Provides Training (precepting) for new students and employees.
- Provides in-service training to staff as directed
- Is able to supervise and execute all lab activities.
- Participates in developing and implementing patient behavior contracts.
- Has advance knowledge in water treatment.
- Actively seeks out and participates in continuing education related to dialysis.
