Under general supervision the Diabetes Educator is responsible to assist with the daily assessment of the needs of the in-patient and out-patient departments related to diabetes patient education, initial and on-going training of staff, coordinate, implement and evaluate specific diabetes education related to clinical nursing/staff functions. The incumbent is also responsible for ensuring that all patient care nursing staff is oriented to the diabetes standards of care and the nursing scope of practice at the Medical Center as well as the policy and procedures and medical equipment used in routine diabetes patient care. The incumbent acts as a facilitator for learning new skills as well as updating current skills related to diabetes. The Diabetes Educator is responsible for communication with the Out-Patient Nutrition and Diabetes Manager as well as the Directors and Supervisors regarding diabetes educational needs, and participates in planning the curriculum. The incumbent demonstrates professional accountability in the acknowledgement of, and compliance with accepted standards of nursing care as well as a commitment to act within ethical principles and uses independent, dependent, and interdependent interventions to fulfill this responsibility.
Education and Work Experience
- Current and valid state RN or RD License/Registered.
- Current BLS (AHA) certificate upon hire and maintain current.
- Certified Diabetes Educator certification, Preferred. (If not a CDE, 15 hrs. of Continuing Education in Diabetes within 2 months of hire and 15 hours of Continuing Education every year until CDE obtained).
- A minimum of three (3) years experience in an acute care hospital environment.
- Excellent clinical, interpersonal and communication skills essential.
- Team approach to patient care.
- Working knowledge of computers and computer applications.
- Day and evening flexibility required.
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or Masters of Science in Nutrition preferred.

A reasonable compensation estimate for this role, which includes estimated wages, benefits, and other forms of compensation, is $35.91 to $53.65. The exact starting compensation to be offered will be determined at the time of selecting an applicant for hire, in which a wide range of factors will be considered, including but not limited to, skillset, years of applicable experience, education, credentials and licensure.
