SUMMARY OF THE JOB
Responsible for aiding the Chief of Police in supervising, planning, and directing law enforcement, security programs, and personnel relating to the operations of the department, as it relates to the safety and security of co-workers, patients, visitors, and all others. Help to ensure compliance with all applicable city, county, state, and federal regulations governing law enforcement and security in a healthcare environment and ensures the fulfillment of the overall mission of the department. In partnership with the Chief of Police, identifies and evaluates all security risks and coordinates the implementation of procedures and processes to minimize these risks. Supports the Chief of Police with investigations, hiring, training, and dispatch functions for Deaconess Health.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES (50%)
Job Duties include the following, other duties may be assigned.
  • Enforces Indiana State Statutes relevant to criminal activity occurring on Deaconess Health System Campuses.
  • Reviews case reports, affidavits, and use of force reports.
  • Assists with policy and procedure creation and refinement.
  • Enforces hospital regulations and policies designed to prevent theft and unauthorized access.
  • Assists in all emergencies inside and outside of Deaconess Facilities in accordance with Indiana Coe 16-18-4.
  • Investigates and files reports concerning irregular activities. Promptly reports incidents involving criminal activities.
  • Skilled in security procedures and have ability to work well with other security and public safety agencies, exhibit knowledge of security regulations, rules of evidence, and firearms/certifications, and demonstrate competence in developing new policies and procedures.
  • Assist with Implementation of building security and security protection measures as directed by the Environmental Safety Officer in consultation with Department Manager and Administration.
  • May supplement the off-duty law enforcement officer, Deaconess Police officer, or other security staff in the event these staff are not available.
  • Assists Environmental Safety Officer and the Site Managers in developing security and operational policies and plans, guidelines and procedures.
  • Assists in performing duties as needed to assure the continued functioning of the facilities in the event of disaster.
  • Coordinates security awareness training.
  • Is an active member of the Security and Emergency Preparedness Teams.
  • Attends staff meetings and in-services.
  • Satisfies the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy training board's required 8-week Tier II law enforcement training requirement and all required mandatory training as directed by Indiana Law Enforcement Academy training board.
  • Successfully complete a background investigation and mental health exam as defined in Indiana Coe 16-18-4.
  • OTHER FUNCTIONS include the following
      • Complies with hospital policies and procedures.
      • Promotes a harmonious and cooperative work environment.
      • Maintains confidentiality of all patient information including that of family, friends and staff who may be patients.
      • Assist with reporting on issues, operations, staffing, helicopters landings, budget performance and other metrics on a monthly basis.
      • Acts in a professional manner and promotes a positive public image.
      • Reports to the Security Manager.
      • Acts as liaison between staff and contract security.
      • Works in cooperation with staff if a critical event occurs.
      • Supplies approved documents, information to outside police agencies.
      • Responds for assistance when requested to do so by staff.
  • Supervisory Responsibilities
      • Responsible for assisting the Chief of Police in supervising, planning, and directing the security programs and personnel relating to the operations of the department.
      • In partnership with the Chief of Police, identifies and evaluates all security risks and coordinates the implementation of procedures and processes to minimize these risks. Oversees, directs, and guides, investigations, hiring, and dispatch functions for Deaconess Health.

JOB Requirements & QUALIFICATIONS

  • Education and Experience
    • A bachelor's degree in the social sciences, or ten years of general experience in the military police or law enforcement, including three to five years as a supervisor/training officer.
    • Equivalent levels of education or general experience may be substituted.
  • Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
    • Certification in Management of Aggressive Behavior course as approved by Deaconess Health System.
  • Language Skills
    • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Must have the ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization and in educational or other settings.
  • Mathematical Skills
    • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals.
  • Reasoning Ability
    • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Computer Skills
    • Must have a basic working knowledge and be competent with Microsoft Office Word, Excel and Outlook.
  • Other skills, ability or knowledge
    • Must be able to deal effectively with patients and family members in a crisis and to deal with aggressive behavior of individuals.
    • Training in OSHA, fire and emergency requirements.
    • Training in Crisis Management.
    • Deal effectively with patients and family members in a crisis situation and to deal with abusive people.
