Job description

JOB SUMMARY: 

Provides quality ancillary services to medical providers in a customer-service-oriented environment. Performs Bone Densitometry procedures for patients, distributes the results to in-house providers, and other technical duties for routine patient visits. Employee would also schedule outside referrals as needed. 

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: 

High school diploma or GED equivalent. Graduation from an accredited X-Ray Technologist/Technician Program. One-year clinic/ bone density scan experience preferred. 

LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION, and/or REGISTRATION: 

Certification by the International Society for Clinical Densitometry. Current Certification by ARRT in radiography or equivalent. Current Certification by CDT (International Society for Clinical Densitometry) preferred. Current Certification by manufacturer upon completion of training. Current CPR certification. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 

  1. Schedules referral appointments for patients as directed by provider. Provides the patient with privacy, and instructions to assure a high quality result. 
  2. Answers medical record and billing questions as needed. Calls insurance companies and pre-certifies referral requests. 
  3. Answers telephone calls, records messages for providers and staff. Understands and can perform duties associated with basic medical office procedures such as data entry, filing, and examination of charts for accuracy and completeness. May fill-in for other support staff when necessary. 
  4. Receives scan orders from providers, prepares necessary documentation, and perform all routine bone densitometry scans. Performs consistently optimal quality bone densitometry scans. 
  5. Corroborates patient's clinical history with procedure, assuring information is documented and available for use by a provider. Provides patient education prior to the procedure and provides post-procedure osteoporosis prevention instruction. Schedules outside referrals and prepares necessary paperwork for referrals. 
  6. Positions the patient to demonstrate the anatomic area of interest, respecting the patient?s range of motion without discomfort. Practices universal precautions. Practices sterile technique and prevents cross contamination. 
  7. Logs bone density procedures completed and processes related paperwork using computer equipment as directed. 
  8. Maintains bone density exam room inventory control and requisitions supplies for that area. 
  9. Maintains accurate scan log and necessary documentation for all scans according to standards. 
  10. Performs all bone densitometry procedures accurately, precisely, and efficiently under minimal supervision. 
  11. Reports accurate, efficient, legible, and timely scan results following clinic protocols and drawing special alert to providers and/or nurses on red flag results. Obtains necessary test results, distributes and reports all scan results to appropriate providers, filing all scan results. Reports varying in-house scan results in addition to all abnormal findings to clinical staff. 
  12.  Maintains and documents quality control on all procedures performed, detecting shifts of trends in control values, correcting problems when values are not within set limits, documenting problems, researching new courses of action when necessary, and ensuring that the supervisor is aware of any problems. 

SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Knowledge of all Bone Densitometry equipment and testing to operate, clean, and sterilize 
  • Knowledge of anatomy and physiology necessary to produce a quality bone densitometry scan 
  • Knowledge of x-ray procedures and protocols 
  • Knowledge of radiology equipment including safety hazards common to radiology 
  • Knowledge of appropriate medical terminology to communicate with staff 
  • Knowledge of computer systems and applications 
  • Knowledge of organizational policies, procedures and protocols 
  • Knowledge of common safety hazards and universal precautions to establish a safe work environment
