Description
City Theatre Company, Pittsburgh's leading professional theater dedicated to new plays, seeks to hire aDEVELOPMENT & EVENTS MANAGER. This full-time, exempt staff position is part of an expanding fundraising team and will work closely with leadership to strategically manage and increase support to the organization's annual fund. This is a critical revenue-generating position with the stated goal of increasing City Theatre's ability to expand its contributed income from events, corporations, foundations, government sources, and individuals. City Theatre's annual operating budget is $3.3M, of which approximately $2M is raised annually from individuals, government entities, foundations, corporations, and special events.
Requirements
Principle responsibilities and duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Imagining, implementing, and managing events for donors and funders throughout the season, including major annual fundraisers and opening nights. These duties to include arranging catering; inviting guests via phone, email, and mail; coordinating vendors; preparing guest profiles' and staffing events.
  • Soliciting organizational sponsorships from corporations and maintaining relationships with corporate representatives.
  • Coordinating the timely submission of government and foundation grants and reports with the organization's outside grant-writing firm, including proofing, copy editing/writing, supporting material development, and budgeting.
  • Updating and notifying elected officials of organizational activities, events, and programs.
  • Collaborating with Marketing to ensure that development materials are brand-sensitive, compelling, and professionally presented for all events and other annual fund needs.
  • Managing a portfolio of mid-level individual donors and assisting in the implementation of annual fund and special project campaigns.
  • Researching potential new institutional funding prospects.
  • Assisting the Director of Giving in various capacities, including board relations (scheduling, note-taking/minutes, meeting planning/follow-up) and staffing development-related committees and projects.

The successful candidate will demonstrate:
  • At least two (2) years of dedicated and successful fundraising experience (or comparable adjacent roles that would adequately inform the ability to adapt to development activities-i.e., event planning, sales, copy-writing, etc.).
  • Responsiveness, reliability, and thoroughness.
  • Diplomacy, discretion, and a commitment to confidentiality as this position will work closely in stewarding donors and funders, and will be privy to personal information and organizational strategies.
  • Ability to collaborate with team members and stakeholders from a wide variety of backgrounds, work-styles, and professional experiences.
  • Strong writing and communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite and Office 365 - including Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and SharePoint - and comfort with web-based software, including project and donor management technology. (City Theatre utilizes Tessitura as its CRM; all development staff will need to learn and become proficient in this software.)
  • Familiarity with financial basics, including budgets, using spreadsheets, and interpreting financial documents such and profit & loss statements and balance sheets are a plus.
  • Ability to initiate, self-start, multi-task, problem-solve, and meet deadlines with strong attention to detail.

Requirements of position:
  • Position requires occasional physical demands typical of events, numerous hours seated at a desk, and occasional evenings and weekends which are the nature of working at a theater.
  • Though some work-from-home opportunities may arise, this position does require on-site responsibilities and the successful candidate must be local to the Pittsburgh region.
  • Be fully vaccinated from Covid-19 and current with all CDC-recommended and eligible boosters.

What does success look like?
In three to five years, this position will have helped City Theatre recover from the pandemic with increased and more efficient fundraising operations and revenue attainment.
For the individual in the role, this position will provide critical, on-the-ground training for a career in arts and/or nonprofit fundraising including possible growth within the organization. Fundraising skills to be developed from this role include donor cultivation and stewardship, making the "ask," grants management, and event planning. Within a few years, a successful candidate will be ready to serve as a major gifts officer or development director while also learning important skills seen in executive leadership.
Reporting & Compensation:
The position reports directly to the Director of Giving (currently vacant) and will work closely with Managing Director James McNeel. It is a full-time, exempt position with an annual salary range of $47,000 - $50,000, plus a competitive benefits package, including a 100% employer-covered health plan, optional vision, dental, and 403(b) plans, and generous paid leave; some work-from-home flexibility is available.
