Position Description
The Harris County Sheriff's Office is hiring Detention Officers within the Criminal Justice Command.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Responsible for the proper care, custody, and control of inmates housed within the Harris County Jail facilities.
The Detention Officer (Jailer) Position is a Civil Service-protected position with the Harris County Sheriff's Office.
NOTE: Graduating High School Seniors (Class of 2022 ONLY), use a copy of school ID to apply.
- High School Diploma or G.E.D.
- At least 18 years of age or 18 years of age at hire
- Valid Driver's License (Texas issued driver's license will be required by hire date)
- Eyesight must be correctable to 20/20 vision, normal color, and peripheral vision
- Correctable normal audible range in both ears
- Pass pre-employment testing
- Written exam (Basic work skills)
- Physical Agility (Squats, Walking Lunges, 165 lbs dummy drag, Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) and Fire Extinguisher simulated carry)
- Thorough background investigation (Criminal background check, fingerprinting, personal interview, etc.)
- Psychological evaluation
- Drug screening
If selected, PAID employment begins the first day of the required (7) week Basic Jailers Course at the Harris County Sheriff's Office Academy.
Successful completion of the (7) week Basic Jailers Course is required for continued employment as a Detention Officer with the Harris County Sheriff's Office.
