Detention Officer

DEFINITION

Under general supervision; a Detention Officer is responsible for the security of the facility. The Detention Officer is responsible for the custody and control of inmates

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED

• Responsible for custody and control of inmates, their physical movement, and all of their needs. For the security of the physical plant, records, logs, keys, and all property of the Authority and inmates.
• Operates control room, completes facility logs and records.
• Conducts inspections and searches of inmates and cells as needed. Enforce contraband control and inmate rules.
• Observes inmates and trusties for abnormal conditions and corrects situations immediately. Reports any criminal intelligence to supervisor.
• Inspects physical plant and kitchen for cleanliness, maintenance problems and unsafe conditions, and takes appropriate action to correct. Inspects cleaning materials and supplies that enter and leave cells.
• Coordinate inmates for sick call, doctor and dental visits, church services, and accompanies nurse on medication rounds.
• Logs all visitors, conducts security checks and searches as necessary, and observes inmate visitation.
• Oversees inmate exercise, feeds inmates, completes and issues property/money release authorizations. Distributes and collects inmate requests for legal materials, visitor cards, trustee status applications, incoming and outgoing mail, and library materials. Reviews, answers and distributes prisoner requests and grievances.
• Ensures that all inmates have routine access to showers, distributes hygiene products, clean clothing, clean linens and clean bedding.
• Searches, supervises and directly oversees all inmate activities.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, AND ABILITIES

• Skill in basic typing, report writing, application of jail security techniques, maintaining security of inmates, and application of principles of supervision.
• Knowledge of inter‑departmental correspondence, departmental policies, rules and regulations, security techniques, jail records, and detention operation procedures.
• Ability to gain respect and cooperation of others, to remain alert and vigilant, exercise initiative and independent judgment, understand and follow oral and written instructions, and deal tactfully with others.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $18.00 - $20.00 per hour
