Summary of Position: Job duties include performing major investigations that are complex and sensitive in nature as assigned by the Director or Assistant Director of Public Safety; supervise, oversee, and provide assistance to all major criminal investigations conducted by Ferris State University police officers; regularly meet with detectives from local law enforcement agencies to collaborate and combat crime trends in the area as well as solving major and/or complex criminal investigations; serve as a liaison between community partners; coordinate educational trainings and programs for the campus community; serve as the day shift supervisor as well as a uniformed supervisor, when needed; supervise Service Officers; other police related functions as assigned by the Director or Assistant Director of Public Safety.

Required Education: High School Diploma or GED.
Required Work Experience: Three (3) years as a fulltime patrol officer.
Required Licenses and Certifications: MCOLES certified, certifiable, or out of state Law Enforcement Officer to obtain MCOLES certification within two months of hire date.
Ability to obtain Michigan driver's license within two months of hire date.
Ability to obtain and maintain annual firearms qualification.

Additional Education/Experiences to be Considered: An Associates Degree in Criminal Justice or related field is desirable.
Essential Duties/Responsibilities: The duties of a Detective Sergeant assigned to the Ferris State University Department of Public safety are included but not limited to the items listed below.
Investigations:
• Conduct major investigations that are complex and sensitive in nature as assigned by the Director or Assistant Director of Public Safety
• Coordinate investigations to ensure follow-up is completed; assign officers to conduct follow-up investigations
• Examine crime scenes to obtain clues and gather evidence; process and supervise crime scenes through the collection, preservation, documentation, and analysis of evidence.
• Secure and execute search warrants for criminal cases
• Conduct searches as necessary with search a warrant; conduct warrantless searches in compliance with Fourth Amendment protections and exceptions
• Process evidence, prepare court case, and provide legal testimony
• Arrest and detain persons suspected of criminal activities
• Work with the prosecutor's office and district court to secure arrest warrants for person(s) arrested by warrantless arrest
• Daily review of all investigative reports
• Attend regular local detective meeting to discuss local, regional, and statewide crime trends
• Act as a collaborative taskforce with other area detectives in solving major crimes or trends which may have an impact on the campus community
• Enforce departmental directives and rules and regulations, and in general requiring compliance with all department policies and procedures, general, special personnel orders and memos
• Conduct investigations of citizen complaints and officer policy violations as directed by the Director or Assistant Director of Public Safety, pursuant to departmental policies and procedures.
• Conduct pre-employment background investigations for officer candidates, documenting findings in an investigative report
Supervision:
• Supervise, oversee, and provide assistance to all major criminal investigations conducted by Ferris State University police officers
• Ensure investigative reports are factual, and accurately documenting a thorough and competent investigation in compliance with all professional standards, policies, and procedures
• Review all day shift reports documented in the department's records management system.
• Complete a monthly case supervision of all 'Open' investigative reports for members assigned to the day shift and provide a report corresponding report to the Assistant Director of Public Safety detailing efforts to bring each 'Open' investigation to a successful completion
• Act as the department's Property Manager, properly securing and tracking all evidence and property seized and/or held by the department of public safety
• Operating as the day shift supervisor.
• Operating as a uniformed supervisor as warranted by staffing levels and/or task assigned.
• Supervise and oversee the student service officers
Communication Activities
• Interact and communicates with the public, co-workers, staff, students, and other police departments
• Enter, transcribes, records, stores, or maintains information in either written form or by electronic/magnetic recording
• Complete daily logs/work records
Decision-Making Activities
• Reviews fact, literature, law books, etc., to draw conclusions regarding if laws have been broken or to determine if an arrest is warranted
• Observe and analyze situations to determine appropriate responses
Staff Assistance Activities
• Provide back up for other officers
• Provide general assistance to other police officers, and other agencies
• Assist others in investigative areas of professional police work
Planning and Organizing Activities
• Develop plans to accomplish work
• Organizs time to meet assignment deadlines
Controlling Situations/Activities
• Protect property from unnecessary damage
• Calm distraught persons at emergency scenes
• Respond to violence and crime scenes
• May respond to disturbance calls
• Enforce laws and coverage of special events such as sporting events and concerts
• Restrain suspects and make arrests when appropriate
• Provide medical assistance to the injured or sick
• Establish barricades around event parameters
• Perform crowd control activities
• Participate in building checks

• Telecommunication equipment (e.g., phone, 800Mhz MPSC Radio)
• Radar unit
• Handcuffs
• Video/audio recording equipment (e.g., copier, facsimile, computer)
• Emergency/first aid equipment (e.g., defibrillator, fire extinguisher)

Policies and Procedures
In addition to the above activities, Detective Sergeants are required to follow department rules and regulations. These include:
• Keeping appointments with interdepartmental meetings, court dates, pre-trial conferences, and training sessions
• Maintaining standards of appearance such as uniform, well-groomed hair and hygiene and physical fitness
• Completing legal forms and documents
• Obeying state laws and department policies under normal and emergency situations
• Participating in training
• May require incumbent to provide on-site lead supervision over student service officers who may be present
• Deters, restrains and/or arrests individuals attempting to inflict physical harm on themselves or others or to commit criminal acts
• Complete necessary administrative form/reports related to incidents and/or arrests, to include gathering pertinent information from participants and/or witnesses and organizing it in a logical written form
• Maintain regular communication with student service officers to obtain information about unusual and/or suspicious situations
• Appear in court regarding incidents that occur in the university community or elsewhere when necessary
• Provide emergency first aid and/or CPR to injured persons, or assist in the transportation of ill or injured persons when necessary
• Attend internal and/or external training courses, classes and seminars to further develop protection service skills and knowledge
• Provide basic information and directions to students, faculty, staff and/or the general public
• Provide superiors with daily activity reports/summaries related to the overall training and performance of student service officers
• Maintain positive relations with external law enforcement agencies to obtain or exchange relevant protection service information
• Provide programs and presentations which promote safety and security to students, faculty and staff
• Perform other work-related duties as requested
