Primary Purpose of this Position:

Project manage and coordinate the work of outside detailers so that quality shop drawings are produced on schedule for both approvals and for shop fabrication needs.  Work closely with production and project managers to keep design drawings, RFI's, and other project deliverables on time and accurate.

 

Essential Job Functions:

  1. Project manage and coordinate the work of outside detailers to produce quality drawings on schedule.
  2. Ensure that all detail drawings prepared by outside detailing sources conform to industry codes, contract drawings and specifications for each assigned project.
  3. Responsible for all aspects of the detailing function, including the production and checking of shop and erection drawings, electronic files, lists, etc. for each assigned project.
  4. Anticipate delays or other problems regarding shop drawings whenever possible.  Notify the Engineering Manager, project manager, and other appropriate personnel of drawing schedule delays or changes.  Resolve problems or recommend solutions whenever possible and appropriate.
  5. Document and relay all information regarding changes and revisions to contract drawings, specifications, and approval drawings to appropriate personnel so that change orders are submitted on a timely basis to the customer. When a nonconformance arises in fabrication, has the authority to solve a nonconformance issue.  If uncomfortable with authority, can consult the Engineering Manager for a solution.
  6. Maintain and update, on a near real-time basis, all necessary project files and records in order to document all incoming and outgoing drawings and other documents relating to approvals, design changes, drawing revisions and other project engineering and detailing issues.
  7. Review and verify change orders submitted by outside detailing subcontractors.
  8. Evaluate and document the performance of outside detailing subcontractors.
Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  1. Excellent ability to coordinate the work of outside detailers on multiple projects at the same time.
  2. Excellent skills in leading or working as a member of a team.
  3. Excellent knowledge of AISC and AWS codes, shop fabrication and steel erection methods and processes, and general construction practices.
  4. Excellent knowledge and skill in the use of detailing software and good skills in using word processing, spreadsheet and email software.
  5. Superior skill and ability to communicate, document and resolve problems and questions in a clear and timely manner.
  6. Superior knowledge and skill to develop and maintain drawing schedules and hold teams accountable to meet schedules.

 

Physical Demands:

  1. Stand OCCASIONALLY over the course of the 8 to 12 hour work shift.
  2. Walk OCCASIONALLY over the course of the 8 to 12 hour work shift.  The distances walked will range from a distance of a few feet to several hundred feet.
  3. Sit FREQUENTLY to CONTINUOUSLY over the course of the 8 to 12 hour work shift.
  4. Lift weights up to 30 pounds OCCASIONALLY from floor to head level, which includes the various prints, books, binders, and papers utilized to perform the usual work duties. 
  5. Lift weights up to 50 pounds RARELY to OCCASIONALLY from floor to chest level, which may include boxes of papers, books, etc.
  6. Carry weights noted above distances ranging from a few feet to several hundred feet.  50 pounds would be carried 50 feet.  Lifting devices are available.
  7. Climb OCCASIONALLY onto steps or ladders.
  8. Stoop or crouch OCCASIONALLY while performing the regular job duties.  Tasks would include looking in filing cabinets, removing supplies, and restocking paper in the copier.  The position will be held continuously for a few seconds to a few minutes, depending upon task. 
  9. Kneel OCCASIONALLY in the commission of job duties, depending upon the task.
  10. Crawl OCCASIONALLY up to 10 feet to plug in equipment, retrieve dropped materials, etc.
  11. Reach forward OCCASIONALLY to FREQUENTLY to perform job duties or to retrieve tools.  The employee will OCCASIONALLY to FREQUENTLY be required to reach to full forward extension.
  12. Reach overhead OCCASIONALLY to retrieve books, supplies, etc.
  13. Push and pull drawers open OCCASIONALLY to FREQUENTLY to retrieve tools or supplies.
  14. Gross finger dexterity skills required operating the mouse utilized in the course of standard job duties.  Fine finger dexterity is not required.

 

Non-Material Handling Demands
  1. Employee is expected to work 40 hours a week.  However, hours including overtime and weekends may be required based on Drake-Williams Steel's needs.
  2. Hear sufficiently to be aware of safety issues.
  3. Visual ability to read and interpret material to satisfactorily do job.
  4. Exposure to heat, cold, wet and humid conditions OCCASIONALLY.
  5. Exposure to fumes, odors and dusts OCCASIONALLY.
  6. Exposure to solvents, greases, oils, and coolants OCCASIONALLY.
  7. Wear all required Personal Protective Equipment.  PPE includes steel-toe safety shoes, hearing protection, safety glasses, gloves, and hard hats.

 

Tools Utilized:

Pencil, Square, Tape Measure, Markers, and other miscellaneous office supplies.

 

Experience and Education Required:

  1. High school education or equivalent required.  Associate degree in structural steel detailing preferred.
  2. Minimum of 5 years of detailing team leader experience and five years of checking experience required.
  3. Experience with Tekla or SDS/2 preferred.
