Design Planner

Job Title: Design Planner (2700-40, J#6658, 3690)

Department: Division of Planning and Development

Reports To: Chief Design Planner

Union: AFSCME 2532

Salary: $71,761.52 (min) to $ 77,223.17(max); annually; 35hrs weekly

FLSA Status: Non-exempt

SUMMARY

Develops and implements urban design criteria and open space planning concepts in conformance with the City's Comprehensive Master Plan. Attends meetings and works with City

Boards, businesses and neighborhood groups to encourage input in developing urban design criteria and open space plans. Manages programs and projects; responsible for seeking and managing grant opportunities which apply to projects or programs that address urban design, open space and recreational opportunities within the City.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Designs all aspects of urban and space planning based on City’s planning goals.
  • Develops concept designs for overall planning efforts and for project specific efforts.
  • Produces models, boards, graphs and other design elements as necessary to communicate departmental goals and projects.
  • In conjunction with other agencies, develops urban design criteria.
  • Maintains library of plans, specs, construction documents, etc.
  • Other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

May supervise professional consultants or interns.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Proven understanding of urban design and open space planning strategies and tools. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Bachelor's Degree in Urban Planning, Landscape

Architecture or related field required. Demonstrated graphic skills required. 2-3 years experience preferred. Proficient use of computer programs for word processing, data base management and spread sheets. Knowledge of GIS and its applications in the Planning field.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Valid driver's license required.
