Form of workWe are looking for aDesert Tortoise Biologist to join us in Coachella Valley. This person has 5+ years of compliance monitoring and/or biological monitoring experience, including Desert Tortoise. Mohave ground squirrel and Joshua tree survey experience is preferred. This position will include approximately 85% fieldwork in the Coachella Valley; office work will be comprised of data entry and analysis and some report preparation.

Who You Are
A Biologist with a minimum of 5 years of professional experience supporting field studies and environmental compliance within Southern California, including Desert Tortoise surveys. Experience with Mojave ground squirrel and Joshua tree surveys is highly preferred. Additional experience may include habitat mapping and species surveys, floral and faunal inventories and assessments, regulatory compliance monitoring, and preparing permit applications and supporting documentation. You hold a bachelor’s degree in an environmental discipline.
You enjoy fieldwork and can walk long distances carrying a backpack; and are able to lift at least 50 pounds. You are confident working outside, in remote and rural settings, as well as in urban environments. Physical outdoor work may include, but may not be limited to, traversing uneven ground and sometimes steep terrain in vegetated environments, fields, and arid lands in inclement weather and uncomfortable working conditions.
You have experience monitoring and reporting on a variety of biological surveys and compliance measures. Experience with data collection applications such as Fulcrum, Collector, and Survey 123 is desirable but not essential. Previous work on construction sites, working around heavy equipment, and communicating with construction staff is required.
You are known for your ability to present information understandably and speak persuasively about complex topics to clients, regulatory agency staff, teaming partners, other project stakeholders and the general public.
You work collaboratively with clients and interdisciplinary teams and are an effective team member and communicator who contributes constructively and cooperatively to solve project and team challenges.
What You Will Do for ESA
Lead Desert Tortoise, Mohave ground squirrel, and Joshua tree l surveys in the Coachella Desert. You may also participate in other biological field studies including such as native flora and fauna surveys, rare plant surveys, vegetation classification and habitat mapping, nesting bird surveys, wetland delineations, endangered species occurrence documentation, and compliance monitoring.
You will perform compliance monitoring and related reporting activities for on-going construction projects; you will work near heavy equipment. You will prepare and submit daily monitoring reports and observe work activities to see that activities comply with applicable mitigation measures and permit conditions. You will navigate through rough terrain in company-provided 4WD vehicles.
You will effectively communicate and collaborate with staff, clients, and teaming partners. You may also be asked to act as task manager with responsibilities including coordinating the task schedule, logistics, disseminating and maintaining related information and resources, assisting with budget tracking and invoicing, meeting with team members to gauge progress toward task completion, and responding to team member or client questions.
You will thrive in a fast-paced, exciting, and challenging environment and be able to manage multiple responsibilities and deadlines, while working on a team or independently. Use judgment and critical thinking to select, apply and adapt standard techniques, methods and procedures for a wide range of biological studies.
You are located near Orange,Los Angeles, San Bernardino, or Riverside County. Field work may require very early morning or late-night end times, as well as long hours. Occasional overnight stays within Southern California may be required.
ESA has established multiple pay ranges tailored to the economic factors in the geographies in which ESA staff reside. For this position the range is $78,681 – $118,022 annually based on our anticipated hiring location as noted in the above job details. Actual compensation is determined by a number of factors including but not limited to an individual’s related experience, education, skills, and the city in which the applicant lives.
