ABOUT THE SHERIFF’S OFFICE:
The Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office is a full service agency that oversees the adult jail, provides patrol, criminal investigations, civil process and search and rescue operations. Special units include SWAT, Marine Patrol, ATV Patrol, Forest Patrol, along with five K9 teams. Founded in 1916 and today led by your duly elected Sheriff L. ABOUT THE JOB:
The Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office is accepting applications for Entry Level and Lateral Patrol Deputies. Please read the entire posting for detailed instructions. Failure to follow directions will result in disqualification of application.
The Deschutes County Sheriff's Office is committed to community policing partnerships and philosophies. Deputies are responsible for performing their duties consistent with the agency mission statement that embodies these philosophies and responsibilities. This position is responsible for protecting life and property in Deschutes County through the enforcement of laws and ordinances. Deputy Sheriffs patrol roads, highways, and business and residential sections in an assigned area; prepare incident reports; investigate motor vehicle accidents, crimes, and social disturbances; issue citations; make arrests; transport offenders under custody to jail; serve warrants of arrest; have daily contact with the general public, and frequent contact with state, federal, city and county law enforcement agencies, District Attorneys, and the court system. Position performs related work as required.


To be considered for this recruitment process, applicants must:

1. APPLICATION: Submit a completed online application to Deschutes County no later than Sunday, March 24, 2024.
2. WRITTEN TESTING: Complete the National Testing Network FRONTLINE test within the past 12 months and no later than Sunday, April 14, 2024.
  • Minimum acceptable Frontline scores are; Video Score-65, Writing Score-70 and Reading Score-70.
  • Certified Lateral Officers within Oregon, or Out of State Certified Lateral Officers that possess a 4 year degree do not need to complete the Frontline test.
3. FITNESS EVALUATION: All applicants will be required to complete and pass the Concept 2 Rower Evaluation prior to receiving a conditional job offer. Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office will administer the Concept 2 Rowing Evaluation. Testing will be scheduled with those candidates who move forward after the interview panel process.
  • The Concept 2 Rowers are an effective tool to assist in achieving high levels of cardiorespiratory fitness. Concept 2 Rowers actively engage both hemispheres of the body (upper and Lower body) and do not place any impact on joints. HIRING PROCESS PHASES:
The Deschutes County Sheriff's Office selection process for this classification includes the following components:
  • Application submission to Deschutes County.
  • Completion of the National Testing Network Frontline test, National Testing Network.
  • Application pre-screening review and selection by Deschutes County.
  • Criminal Background Check.
  • Interview(s).
  • Statement of Personal History Background Investigation.
  • Passing Fitness Evaluation.
  • Sheriff/Captain Interview.
  • Conditional Job Offer.
  • Medical Evaluation / Psychological Evaluation.
  • Formal Job Offer.
Application Selection Process:
Candidates are required to meet certain standards to be considered for hire by the Deschutes County Sheriff's Office including the ability to maintain physical and mental capabilities to complete required job tasks.
The selection process includes a thorough examination of the application form, attachments, and supplemental responses. The application review will be used to assess each candidate's ability to follow instructions and give complete and consistent information in written form. Upon completion of each hiring process phase (5-11), applicants will be notified of his/her status via email.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Patrols roads, highways and business areas in an assigned area, in the enforcement of traffic and criminal laws; responds to a variety of misdemeanor and felony reports.
  • Intervene in disputes and maintain order. Respond to hazardous situations performed in stressful and dangerous environments.
  • Read, understand, and interpret laws, ordinances, regulations, policies and procedures.

  • Acting professionally with regard to code of ethics and confidentiality.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgement when acting in routine situations.
  • Providing credible testimony in trial, depositions and interviews.

Must be willing to work 8, 10, and 12-hour rotating shift assignments, including nights, weekends, and holidays.

Compensation

$5,960.84 to $8,408.24 per month for a 182.53 hour work month. Patrol shifts are currently 12 hours, four days a week (2-days, 2-nights), followed by four days off. Shift assignments are determined by the Sheriff or his designee based on operational needs of the Sheriff's Office. Additional Lateral Recruitment Compensation:


  • For Oregon Certified applicants, certificate pay begins upon hire date.
    • 6% - Intermediate
    • 11% - Advanced
  • Out of State Certified applicants will receive certificate pay as soon as certification is granted by DPSST.
  • 3% Wellness pay begins upon hire date.
  • 50 hours Compensatory Bank issued upon hire date.
  • Lateral certified applicants with up to 60 months experience begin at pay step 2- $36.0959/hr.
  • Lateral certified applicants with 61 months or more experience begin at pay step 3- $37.8982/hr.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Prior law enforcement and/or college degree in related field preferred;
  • OR any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Must be at least 21 years of age by appointment date and be a US citizen within 12 months of employment.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Prior Patrol experience.
  • Higher level of education or degree in a related field.
  • Any additional training or experience in a related field.
  • Military experience.

Necessary Special Requirements

Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Oregon driver's license within 30 days of hire date. The employment offer will be contingent upon presentation of an acceptable and verifiable driver's license, pre-employment screening for criminal history, driving history, and controlled substances (NOTE: Positive test results for marijuana use may result in rescission of a contingent offer of employment). This screening must be completed with satisfactory findings in order for a formal offer of employment to be extended.
A successful candidate will complete a full background investigation prior to receiving a conditional job offer. The psychological and medical evaluations will require completion after the conditional job offer.
Must pass a driving record review and criminal history background.
