Douglas County Sheriff's Office is highly seeking Deputy Sheriff II, Lateral applicants with POST Certificate and experience. The minimum salary is $29.86 however salary is commensurate with the candidates' experience.

Candidates may be hired for either:
  • Deputy Sheriff I: Entry-level with no/minimal prior law enforcement experience and training. $28.37 per hour, essential functions of the position are outlined in this job posting.
  • Deputy Sheriff II: Candidates who hold a current Nevada POST Category I Certificate (or a reciprocal certificate from another state). Certificate must be attached to this application for consideration. Job description and salary range for Deputy Sheriff II can be found here.

Description
Responsible forperforming a variety of public safety and law enforcement services in patrol, detention, court services, or civil process assignments.


Detention

  • Accountability for Inmates - Conducts daily head counts, periodic cell and pod checks; moves inmates to and from locations for court appearances, medical care, visits, etc.
  • Intake and Release of Inmates - Brings inmates into the jail by conducting searches, booking questionnaires, fingerprints, photography, access to bail and phone.
  • Ensures Safety of Inmates and Staff - Conduct facility and person searches for weapons/drugs/contraband; conduct surveillance, investigations, and reports of crimes committed within the detention facility; monitor activity of inmates; handle inmates with mental health issues and provide intervention to ensure safety.
  • Handle Health and Welfare Issues - Carry out processes to ensure that inmates are provided with adequate food, clothing, medicine, and clean living arrangements; Conduct inspections of living conditions to ensure compliance with departmental policy and federal law.
  • Customer Service - Receives and screens visitors and telephone calls and directs the caller to the proper person or personally handles the call; provides information which requires the use of judgment and interpretation of policies, rules and procedures.
  • Court Appearances - Transports inmates to and from court; provides security for court staff and inmates during proceedings; updates legal paperwork to ensure timely compliance with court orders; responds to emergencies in the court house.
  • Medical Treatment - Provide first aid for inmates as required; triage inmates for physician visits and needs for emergency medical treatment and transport; sets up medications and distribute to inmates daily as required; complete documentation for medical issues; provide security for medical staff.
  • Extraditions - Transport inmates to other agency jails, courts, and other facilities; send notices to other agencies of arrests, process warrants, and set-up extraditions with outside companies who transport inmates.
Civil Process
  • Locates and serves subpoenas, summonses, warrants, Orders to Show Cause, restraining orders and Writs of Restitution, possession and execution to individuals, partnerships and corporations.
  • Executes court orders to attach monies, bank accounts, securities, real and personal property.
Court Services
  • Organize probable cause forms, make copies and deliver to District Attorney and Courts as appropriate.
  • Retrieve copies of criminal complaints, prepare logs for court appearances, prepare copies for courts.
  • Prepare court lists and confirms with court clerk's office.
  • Provides court security as required.
All Assignments
  • Training - Attends training as required to satisfy State and department requirements.
  • Assists and provides appropriate first aid.
  • Operates a motor vehicle in a safe and effective manner.
  • Uses standard office equipment, including a computer, in the course of the work.
  • Represents the County with dignity, integrity, and a spirit of cooperation in all relationships with staff and the public.
  • Crime scene preservation and collection of evidence; which includes evidence identification and proper handling procedures.
  • Act as coroner as defined under NRS 259.020.

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

  • High School education/GED; AND:
  • Must be 21 years of age at time of hire.
  • Must be Citizen of the United States at time of testing for the position.
  • Must have no convictions of any crime for which registration in the State of Nevada is required pursuant to NRS 207.090 or 207.152.
  • No DUI conviction within the last 5 years.
  • No crime conviction for Domestic Violence.
  • No drug use/sales within 5 years.
Required Knowledge and Skills
Knowledge of:
  • Principles and techniques of public relations and customer service.
  • County, State, and federal laws, statutes, ordinances and court decisions related to police activities.
  • Principles and practices of effective interrogation.
  • Criminal investigation principles, practices and techniques.
  • Weaponry and associated safety practices.

  • First aid and basic CPR methods.
  • County geography.
  • Computers utilizing standard and specialized software applications.
  • Standard office practices and procedures, including filing and the operation of standard office equipment.

  • Techniques for techniques for dealing with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, ethnic and cultural backgrounds, in person and over the telephone.
Skill in:
  • Developing and implementing goals, objectives, policies, procedures, and safety standards.

REQUIRED CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, AND REGISTRATIONS:
  • Nevada Class C Driver's License.
  • Category 3 Nevada POST Certification obtained during employment.
  • CPR and First Aid certification within six (6) months of date of employment.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS & WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
  • Continued employment is contingent upon all required licenses and certificates being maintained in active status without suspension or revocation.

Testing Information:
Deputy Sheriff I:
Completed applications will be screened for minimum qualifications. Applicants meeting the minimum qualifications will be emailed to schedule their written exam. An online Candidate Preparation Manual can be purchased for $5.00. The Preparation Manual includes detailed recommendations on important concepts, such as the most effective test-taking strategies and methods, specific information about CPS HR test forms, and what to expect on the day of the test administration. Also includes several practice questions covering each section of the test, along with helpful tools, like a sample answer sheet and template test instructions for candidates to prepare before the day of the test. Written Exam:
The exam consists of a written general aptitude test, with a passing score of 70%, an oral board interview process and a physical ability assessment will follow the written exam. Applicants must successfully complete each of the three phases to be eligible for employment.
After successful competition of the written exam, you will move forward to the physical agility testing. If you live outside of 200 miles from Douglas County we will make an effort to complete your testing in one day and you will be notified.
The written exam and oral board interview will be held at the Law Enforcement Center 1038 Buckeye Rd. Minden, NV 89423 at 8:00 AM. Upcoming written test date: WEDNESDAY, MAY 15, 2024

Lateral Deputy Sheriff II:
The written test will be waived for any applicant with a current Nevada Category I POST Certificate.
