JOB SUMMARY

This position is responsible for the protection of life and property and the enforcement of Florida State statute regulations. This work requires the ability to effectively use computer systems and electronic equipment, involves an element of personal danger and entails frequent contact with the public under daily activities and emergency conditions.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES

Drives a motor vehicle and/or walks within residential or business areas to conduct daily patrol, surveillance and investigative functions.

  • Listen to police radio for all transmissions.
  • Offer assistance to other units.
  • Communicate with dispatchers regularly by phone or radio.
  • Respond to calls for service.
  • Investigates violations of Florida State Statutes, County Ordinances, and civil/criminal traffic infractions.
  • Interview suspects, witnesses and victims.
  • Arrest, search and transport violators.
  • Conduct searches (i.e., cars, houses, and buildings).
  • Protect, secure and process crime scenes.
  • Evaluates tactical needs on every call.
  • Recovers stolen property.
  • Performs field sobriety tests.
  • Conducts felony stops.
  • Serves warrants and civil papers.
  • Performs common traffic stops and directs traffic when necessary.
  • Intervenes in domestic disputes.
  • Responds to all calls for service.
  • Counsels parties involved in crises.
  • Investigates missing person’s cases.
  • Assists other agencies with their respective functions as necessary.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Maintains weapons, uniforms and other issued equipment.
  • Adheres to the vehicle maintenance schedule.

· Completes any necessary paperwork to include incident reports, field interview reports, charging affidavits, traffic citations, monthly statistics, administrative paperwork, time sheets and monthly vehicle log.

· Works with sensitive information and must maintain confidentiality at all times.

  • Required to monitor calls on in-vehicle computer and read the daily BOLO’S.
  • Initiates citizen contacts for various purposes.
  • Assists motorists and pedestrians in need of help.
  • Refers the public to the appropriate agencies or services.
  • Participates in special events and programs.
  • Reviews reports and/or depositions in preparation for subpoenas for court appearances.
  • Communicates with the Assistant State Attorney regarding the case as necessary.
  • Testifies at depositions and/or in court.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

According to Sheriff’s Office Procedures, in the absence of a higher ranking official, the Senior Deputy Sheriff assumes a supervisory role.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must be at least 19 years of age.
  • Must be a United States citizen.
  • Must not have been convicted of a felony.
  • Must not have been convicted of a misdemeanor involving moral character.
  • Must not have been dishonorably discharged from any of the Armed Forces of the United States.
  • Must meet visual requirements of at least correctable to 20/40 in each eye.

EXTERNAL and INTERNAL RELATIONSHIP and COMMUNICATION REQUISITE

  • General public to include private citizens, businesses and governmental and municipal entities.
  • Various other contacts relevant to specific department assignment.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or general education degree (GED) is required. Previous experience in law enforcement is preferred. Equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES and REGISTRATIONS

  • Must possess a valid Florida driver’s license.
  • Must possess a Certificate of Completion or Certificate of Compliance in basic law enforcement training with the Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission.
  • Must pass the state certification exam and must successfully complete academy training to become certified according to state regulations.
  • Must be CPR certified.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to have cardiovascular strength and stamina including the ability to chase subjects on foot (i.e. up/down stairs, around buildings, on city streets, through or in between natural barriers such as water, trees, bushes, etc., or a combination of these, etc.) Must be able to engage in violent and physical confrontations including fighting with subjects and/or re-directing them to the ground. Must be able to physically secure a resisting subject with the appropriate restraints after a physical confrontation. Visual requirements include the ability to use visual depth, distance and color perception, night and peripheral vision. Must be able to use both hands simultaneously and have manual and finger dexterity, flexibility of upper body and limbs, strength in upper and lower body, legs, back, arms and hands. Must be able to wear a utility equipment belt capable of carrying multiple pieces of required equipment for extended periods of time. Must possess coordination in legs, arms, hands, eye-hand, steadiness of hand/arm, physical speed, quick reflexes, balance/equilibrium and be able to stand for long periods of time. Ability to run, walk, bend/lean over, twist/turn and maneuvers into and out of small spaces and vehicles. Ability to coordinate rhythm of compression and breaths during CPR. Sketch a crime scene, objects, buildings or other items. Ability to accept acute pain.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work is performed in various environments. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Depending on assignment, the employee may be required to work long and/or irregular work hours, including evenings and/or weekends. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may encounter the following: chemicals, fumes, toxic substances, insects, noise, vibrations, slippery surfaces, lightning, explosives, oil, tobacco smoke, radiation, radar, allergenic substances, electrical hazards, possible burns, confined or cramped body position for extended periods, irregular eating and sleeping schedules, bodily injury, contact with blood, bodily fluids, infectious or contagious diseases. Weather conditions may include any combination of the following: humidity, low temperatures, high temperatures, heavy rain, exposure to sun, sudden temperature changes, hail, high winds, tornadoes, flooding, hurricanes. Various terrains may be encountered including high grass, woods, ditches, muck, sand, and small hills, as well as water sources such as lakes, rivers, and streams.
