Job description

JOIN REDMOND!

The City of Redmond is a thriving, culturally diverse community and home to over 72,000 residents.  Redmond is also the hub to an array of commerce and industry ranging from technology, aerospace and gaming to biomedical and innovation start-ups. These exciting industries bring smart, sustainable growth as well as cutting-edge architecture and design, including the new Meta Building X designed by world-renown architect Frank Ghery.
That is why we think our new Deputy Fire Marshal position is a fantastic opportunity for an experienced fire protection professional who appreciates challenging architecture and construction and wants to be an instrumental part of shaping the future of the Redmond's developments and buildings over the next decade.

The Deputy Fire Marshal, under the supervision of the Assistant Fire Marshal in the Redmond Fire Department, performs fire investigations, reviews building plans for new construction, and performs inspections of existing buildings.
It is a great opportunity for someone who is either a full-time firefighter considering a career move or a civilian fire prevention specialist working full-time as a plans reviewer or building inspector who'd like to attend the firefighter training academy.
There are many reasons why firefighters become Deputy Fire Marshals:

  • The work schedule is great for people who prefer consistency and like being home every night instead of being on-shift for 24 hours or away from family.
  • It's a way to shift from being reactive to becoming more proactive in protecting the community
  • It offers a great opportunity for promotions in the next few years in our agency to supervisor positions
Further, working for the Redmond Fire Department as our Deputy Fire Marshal offers even more benefits, such as a strong culture that fosters collaboration and having a voice. That means we aren't the traditional "top down" organization. In fact, unlike other agencies, our Deputy Fire Marshals are empowered to make decisions and are given the ability to hone into something that really interests them and become an expert in it.
For those reasons as well as the innovations happening in our City's developments, the Redmond Fire Department is considered a top-shelf agency when it comes to fire prevention. Therefore, we are looking for progressive people ready to join a progressive department.  ROLE & RESPONSIBILITIES

Here are a few of the key responsibilities of the Deputy Fire Marshal:

  • Visits premises of new construction or existing buildings to enforce engineering and construction codes related to fire protection.
  • Reviews construction plans for compliance of life safety and applicable codes on new or existing buildings.
  • Inspects existing buildings for code violations and/or to ensure construction is proceeding in accordance with specifications and plan documents.
  • Represents the fire department on committees and at meetings involving long-range planning of commercial and residential development.
  • Monitors and oversees the inspection of buildings; instructs personnel in code enforcement.
  • Assists in the design and construction of projects and displays on fire prevention for public education.
  • Issues operational fire code permits for regulated processes and citations for violation of the Redmond Fire Code.
  • Investigate fires to determine accidental, natural, or incendiary causes.
  • Writes comprehensive investigative reports used by prosecutors, judges, attorneys, and insurance companies.
  • Testifies as a witness regarding fire prevention or investigation in both civil and criminal court actions.
For a complete list of job responsibilities, working conditions and physical activities, please review the Deputy Fire Marshal classification. This position is covered by the Redmond Fire Fighters Union I.A.F.F., Local 2829 as an assignment within a uniformed Civil Service position. QUALIFICATIONS
