Back to all Jobs Deputy Fire Marshal Location: Technical, Galveston, TX Department: Fire Job Status: Full-Time Rate of Pay: $52,854 - $79,281 Status: Open Until Filled Apply Now Job Description Under general supervision, conducts fire and arson investigations; performs inspections of commercial, industrial and public buildings to ensure compliance with City fire prevention codes and ordinances. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following representative duties, knowledge, and skills. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following: Conducts inspections or re-inspections of commercial, industrial and public buildings. Participates in arson and major fire investigations; photographs fire scenes; preserves and collects evidence; interviews victims, witnesses and suspects. Reviews plans for new construction to determine compliance with fire prevention codes.

Assists business owners in developing and maintaining plans for fire prevention. Applies and explains complex laws, codes, regulations and ordinances to various audiences. Issues operational and construction permits.

Responds to information requests from the Fire Marshal. Investigates citizen complaints regarding possible fire hazards. Prepares various written correspondence, reports and other related written materials.

Builds and maintains working relationships with other local, state and federal agencies. Makes public appearances at civic clubs, associations and community organizations. Responds to public inquiries regarding fire prevention issues or questions.

Attends various internal and external meetings to represent the Department. Supports the relationship between the City of Galveston and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with citizens, visitors, and City staff; maintains confidentiality of work-related issues and City information; performs other duties as required or assigned. Employees may at any time be required to work in order to provide for the safety and well-being of the general public, including the delivery and restoration of vital services, in the event of an emergency.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS: Knowledge: City organization, operations, policies, and procedures. Modern fire prevention methods, municipal ordinances and regulations regarding fire prevention. Building construction methods and the types of associated fire hazards.

International Fire and Building Codes. Fire investigation methods and procedures. Safe work practices and procedures.

Modern firefighting methods, techniques, tools and equipment. National Fire Protection Administration (NFPA) codes and standards. Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP) mandates.

Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) mandates. Texas local government codes. Business and personal computers, and spreadsheet software applications.

Skilled in: Handling situations requiring diplomacy, fairness, firmness and sound judgment. Providing efficient customer service. Organizing and performing building and site plan reviews.

Code interpretation and enforcement guidelines. Understanding and applying City policies and procedures, applicable federal and state laws and regulations. Explaining City policies and procedures.

Using hand tools. Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with all levels within the City. Communicating effectively verbally and in writing.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: High School diploma or equivalent; AND three years' experience in fire service operations; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience. Required Certifications: TCOLE Basic Peace Officer license; TCFP Basic Fire Inspector and Arson Investigator certification. A valid Texas Driver's License is required.

LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION: Possession of a valid Texas driver's license. TCOLE Basic Peace Officer license required. TCFP Basic Fire Inspector required.

Arson Investigator certification. PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT: Work is performed both in an indoor and outdoor work environment. May have exposure to dangerous machinery, extreme weather conditions, potential physical harm, hazardous chemicals and infectious diseases.

May be required to climb ladders. May be required to work in confined spaces. May be required to lift and carry items weighing up to 10 pounds.
