Job Summary

Under the administrative direction of the Fire Chief, the Deputy Fire Chief performs a variety of technical, administrative, and supervisory work in planning, organizing, directing, and implementing fire prevention suppression and emergency medical services to prevent or minimize the loss of life and property by fire and other hazardous situations. Responds to major incidents and serves as Acting Fire Chief when assigned. This is a salaried position and is exempt from overtime.

Experience Required: 3 years of experience in Fire or Emergency Medical Services work, 3 of which must have been equivalent to Fire Captain or higher.
Minimum Education Requirements: Associate’s Degree in Fire Studies or closely related field. A combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities may be substituted at the discretion of the City Manager.
Direct Supervisor:Fire Chief.
Supervisory Responsibility: Supervises Fire Captain, Firefighter/EMT, Firefighter/Paramedic; Firefighter and Volunteer Firefighter, directly or through subordinate officers. May supervise part-time and temporary staff, as assigned.
Primary Work Location: Fire station.


Job Responsibilities

An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the following essential duties:
A. Plan, coordinate, supervise, and evaluate Fire and EMS operations; recommend policies and procedures for the Fire Department and EMS Department in order to implement directives from the Fire Chief.

B. Plan and implement Fire and EMS programs in order to carry out the policies and goals related to the operation of the department.

C. Plan for and review specifications for equipment.

D. Direct the operations of departmental in-service training activities.

E. Respond to alarms and personally direct activities at the scene of major emergencies.

F. Maintain discipline and the conduct and general behavior of assigned personnel.

G. Inspect existing structures with Fire Marshal, construction, and remodel sites for compliance with fire codes, as directed; resolve compliance problems with owners within scope of knowledge and authority.

H. Prepare and submit reports to the Fire Chief regarding the Department’s activities and prepare a variety of other reports, as appropriate, including an annual report of activities.

I. Perform Performance Reviews as appropriate.

J. Assist in the investigation of fire incidents.

K. Plan department’s operation with respect to equipment, apparatus and personnel.

L. Assign personnel and equipment to such duties and uses as the service requires.

M. Calculate water fire flows for building requirements with Fire Marshal.

N. Attend conferences and meetings to keep abreast of current trends in the field; represents the City Fire/EMS Departments in a variety of local, county, state, and other meetings.

O. Serve as a member of various committees and organizations representing the City in a variety of local, county, state and other meetings as needed.

P. Perform the duties of command personnel as needed and fulfills obligations during duty days or duty weeks.

R. Perform related tasks as required.

  • Physical Requirements

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; walk; use hands to finger; handle, or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk; hear; and taste and smell.
    The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move over 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
    The employee occasionally works in outside weather conditions and near moving mechanical parts and in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock and vibrations.


    Qualifications

    Other requirements: Must be able to meet the Oklahoma Pension Board requirements by passing a minimum physical performance/agility test. In addition, per O.S. §49-135, persons aged 45 and older are not eligible to enter the Oklahoma Fire Pension and Retirement system.

    Must be a US Citizen. Must be able to read and write the English language.
    Certifications: Must possess a valid driver’s license without record of suspension or revocation in any state, no felony convictions or disqualifying criminal histories within the past 7 years; Firefighter II; Emergency Vehicle Accident Prevention Program (EVAC).
