Investigates all deaths within the County to identify the decedent, determines the cause and manner and notifies next of kin. Conducts interviews with family members of deceased, witnesses, or last person in attendance or present at the time of death; arrange for organ donation.
Coordinates, gathers, and provides information and records from professionals including but not limited to X-Ray technicians, mortuaries, pathologists, anthropologists, dentists, doctors, nurses, hospitals, toxicologists, lawyers, law enforcement, social service agencies and prosecutors, including cases completed by coroner and Deputy Coroners as needed.
Performs clerical functions such as maintenance of case files, writing reports using relevant medical and law enforcement terminology, and corresponds with outside agencies and families.
Witnesses and coordinates autopsies with pathologists and assigned law enforcement personnel to facilitate an orderly processing of cases and achieve accurate medical determinations; sign and record death certificates; and oversee the retention of mandated records.
Properly collect, document, recover, and dispose of personal property in accordance with Colorado state law. If necessary, arrange for notification of next of kin and release of property held in safekeeping to next of kin.
Supports the relationship between Pitkin County government and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with citizens, visitors, and County staff; maintains confidentiality of work-related issues and County information; performs other duties as required or assigned.
Up to 1 year experience in a public safety, funeral/mortuary services or medical/health related field.
High School Diploma or GED equivalent, Bachelor's Degree preferred or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Basic Medicolegal Death Investigator training within one year of employment.
Colorado Coroner Association Certified Death Investigator certification or American Board of Medicolegal Death Investigator certification within two years of employment.
Must possess a valid Colorado Driver's License and acceptable Motor Vehicle Record.
Work is performed in a standard office environment as well as in jails, police stations, hospitals (morgue, ER, ICU). At times, position may require being outside including wilderness areas, rivers, mountains, mines or other unusual areas, only to be performed with approval and supervision of experts when appropriate, e.g. Mountain Rescue, mine operator, etc. in potentially remote locations accessed by foot, horseback, helicopter or motor vehicle.
Position may require irregular hours and include duties on nights, weekends and holidays.
