Compensation: $21.00 - $24.99 hourly DOE ($43,680.00 - $51,979.20 annually DOE)

General Statement of Duties

Performs a variety of working level technical tasks designed to expedite the review, analysis, documentation and reporting of deaths and related causes occurring within the jurisdiction of Canyon County.


Classification Summary

Conducts examinations to determine circumstances and causes of death; examines scenes, takes samples (blood, tissue, etc.); assures proper chain of evidence in criminal cases; may determine the need for autopsy; utilizes forensic processes and procedures to determine possibility of death caused by other than natural causes, accident, self-inflicted wounds or homicide; coordinates and cooperates with law enforcement investigators and criminalist.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities (may vary with specific positions):

  • Receives notification of deaths and determines jurisdictional responsibility;
  • Coordinates with various law enforcement agencies, physicians, hospitals, paramedics and all other related agencies.
  • Conducts examinations to determine circumstances and causes of death.
  • Examines scenes, takes samples (blood, tissue, etc.)
  • Assures proper chain of evidence in criminal cases.
  • May determine the need for autopsy; utilizes forensic processes and procedures to determine possibility of death caused by other than natural causes, accident, self-inflicted wounds or homicide.
  • Coordinates and cooperates with law enforcement investigators and criminalist.
  • Testifies in court pertaining to criminal or civil cases involving death;
  • Provides descriptions and results to tests;
  • Locates or assists to locate relatives of deceased person;
  • Delivers or releases to family members or turns over to County to act as executor.
  • Performs a variety of clerical functions related to creation and maintenance of case logs, files and materials; types correspondence, reports and subpoenas;
  • Prepares reports: coroner monthly supply and inventory reports; stocks and accounts for supplies and materials.
  • Works under the board policy guidance and direction of the County Corner or Chief Deputy.
  • Performs related duties as required.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Essential Duties and Responsibilities (may vary with specific positions)

  • Some knowledge of laboratory methods processes and procedures specific to death scene and evidence analysis, anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, various types of equipment essential to forensic testing and related processes.
  • Various chemicals and chemical properties utilized in evidence analysis;
  • Hazards and safety practices associated with chemicals and infectious diseases;
  • Investigation techniques;
  • Control and preservation of evidence;
  • Applicable federal, state and County laws and ordinances;
  • Applicable department rules, regulations and standard operational procedures;
  • Law enforcement terminology and practices.

Ability to:

  • Work cooperatively and constructively with fellow workers and members of the public to provide public service of the highest quality and quantity;
  • Ability to observe situations, record them and react quickly and calmly;
  • Ability to exhibit imagination, initiative and problem solving capability in dealing with variety of death scene situations and criminal investigations;
  • Deal effectively and courteously with law enforcement officers, administrators, and the public;
  • Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing; ability to act with tact and impartiality;
  • Perform work requiring good physical condition.
  • Skill in use of technical laboratory and forensic equipment, photography.



Acceptable Experience and Training

  • High School Diploma or equivalent in the form of a GED certification; and
  • Two (2) years of law enforcement field experience preferably in accident/crime scene investigation; or
  • Training in Medically sponsored programs, or related field; or
  • Any equivalent combination of education and experience.



Special Qualifications

  • Must be Canyon County resident;
  • Must have valid Idaho driver’s license;
  • Must successfully complete a background investigation, including a polygraph examination, through the National Crime Information Center (NCIC).

  • Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to discern verbal instructions, communicate effectively, interrogate and interview people, discern noises that may require investigation, and perform telephone and radio communication;
  • Sufficient visual acuity, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to comprehend written work instructions, perform surveillance, sight and shoot a firearm, gather evidence at crime scenes, and coordinate and conduct detailed investigations;
  • Sufficient manual dexterity, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to use a firearm safely and effectively, direct traffic, write reports, utilize equipment required for the performance of duties, and operate a vehicle;
  • Sufficient personal mobility, flexibility, stamina, strength, agility, and physical reflexes, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to direct traffic, bend or stoop repeatedly, maneuver through and over rough, uneven, slippery or rocky terrain, perform search activities for extended periods of time, physically apprehend and restrain an individual, and perform all duties required in a law enforcement environment.
